Welcome to music class! In this ongoing weekly drop-in class, students will explore a broad range of foundational music skills and concepts through sing-a-longs, music games, guided listening activities, and more! Classes will be very interactive with plenty of opportunities for students to sing, make music, and actively participate both individually and as a group. Each week, we will cover ~4-6 different activities with a diversity of topics and objectives. This class is designed to be similar to a General Elementary Music class in public schools in the United States, and incorporates national music standards and developmentally-appropriate learning objectives. Through our lessons, we will explore a variety of musical traditions and make musical connections to our own lives and the local and global communities around us. Most importantly, we’ll grow a love for music and have plenty of fun!

Weekly lessons may include:

♪ Sing-a-longs
♪ Music games
♪ Solfege and rhythm activities
♪ Movement and dance
♪ Body percussion, instruments and found sounds
♪ Guided interactive listening activities
♪ Interactive song books and music read-alouds
♪ Brief explorations connecting music to other topics such as history, science, and more

Music repertoire may include:

♪ Children’s music, folk, pop, classical, and more!
♪ Music traditions from around the world
♪ Music in multiple languages
♪ Representation of musicians with marginalized identities (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disability, and more) accompanied by age-appropriate definitions and brief guided conversations about identity

Weekly objectives may include:

♪ Growing a love for music
♪ Identifying and describing musical preferences and interests
♪ Creating and expressing musical ideas
♪ Keeping a steady beat
♪ Pitch exploration and in-tune singing
♪ Identifying, describing, and performing characteristics of music including dynamics, tempo, pitch, and timbre using specific music terminology
♪ Identifying form and structure in music
♪ Recognizing, performing, and notating solfege and rhythm patterns
♪ Exposure to a variety of music genres and traditions from around the world
♪ Making personal and community connections to music
♪ Making connections between music and other concepts and areas of life
♪ Social and emotional learning

NOTE: In order to achieve adequate sound quality for a music class over Zoom, students will need to be muted while we are singing/listening to songs. However, there are many opportunities for verbal participation, and students may be asked to unmute during class. If students are unable to unmute independently, it may be beneficial to have an adult nearby to assist during class.

Students should have a safe space during class to move around, dance, etc.
受講に必要なもの
Students will be able to participate in all class activities without materials. However, for the best experience, I recommend that students keep a box/bin of music materials nearby in an area that is easily accessible during class, but just far enough away to avoid an easy distraction when items are not in use. Recommended materials for music class include:

♪ Hand Drum (DIY: plastic bucket, sturdy cardboard box, or another safe item with a flat surface students can hit with their hand or a mallet like a drum)

♪ Rhythm Sticks (DIY: wooden spoons, markers, or two other safe long, thin stick-like items students can tap together to make sounds)

♪ Fun Sounds (1-3 other instruments or found sounds a student may want to bring to class - ex: shakers, triangle, DIY instruments, or safe household items that make fun sounds)

♪ Small scarf or other piece of fabric

♪ Paper and markers/crayons

Hello! My name is Janelle and I am a K-12 music educator with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. Music has been a passion of mine since before I can remember; I was always the "music kid" growing up, heavily involved in choir, band, and other ensembles, and it brings me immense joy to be able to share my passions with future generations. Currently, my favorite subjects to teach are elementary general music lessons, solfege, and music theory! My professional experience includes more than a decade working for community choirs with students ages 5-18, as well as more recent experience teaching both general elementary lessons and high school choir in public school settings. My primary instrument is voice, I have about 8 years of experience playing flute and piano, and I have received training on a variety of other instruments as well.

When it comes to education, my philosophy is that joy and curiosity are at the center of learning! Regardless of age or skill level, my first priority is for students to build a love and enthusiasm for music, and technical skillsets will grow much more naturally with that foundation. To foster this development, I create lessons built on play, relationship-building, engaging musical repertoire, and student voice. Within the context of these lessons, I introduce and reinforce developmentally appropriate foundational music skills and encourage students to engage in musical explorations that challenge them to grow and build on their pre-existing knowledge and skillsets.

Another core value I hold in my teaching practice is centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. In my classroom, this includes practices such as implementing Universal Design for Learning to ensure that at the foundation, my courses are built to meet the needs of as many students as possible. It also includes representing a variety of identities in my curriculum, with particular care and consideration for marginalized identities including, but not limited to, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, disabled people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, it involves culturally responsive teaching, responding to individual students' needs and identities, and working with with students and families individually to meet the needs of every member of our community. I welcome collaboration and feedback from families to continuously adapt and build on my teaching practice to ensure that it is an equitable and accessible learning environment for all.

Finally, here are some fun facts about me! I'm a bit of a math nerd and love all kinds of puzzles. My favorite color is purple and I like to cook, go for walks with friends, and take care of my houseplants. Oh, and I love elephants - you might be able to spot one or two during some of my music lessons :)
