I am so excited to welcome learners to this one-of-a-kind veterinary medicine (hypothetical) surgery class! I decided to create this class like no other... for learners who are interested in veterinary medicine and surgery and also 'pretend' play (hypothetical situations).

🏅 Awarded both Star and Popular Badges by Outschool in September 2023, this class is taught by an Animal Scientist teacher (diploma received from NC State University). Your instructor is not a surgeon, but worked in vet and animal care for 20+ years.🏅

🌟 There are no real diagnosis or treatments in this course. 🌟

I am so excited for this fast-paced, no-nonsense class. Learners will start class by triaging a hypothetical patient, inquiring about that patient's history, and make decisions concerning (fake) treatment plans for the patient. The instructor will then teach a short lesson on a surgical treatment a real vet could potentially perform.

This course is intended to develop soft skills required in vet school as well as give teacup-sized bites of knowledge to digest, learn, and remember long-term!

🟢 Class Structure
5 minutes: Introductions and Chatter
5 minutes: Case Study, Fake Patient Arrives & Learners Play Doctor
5 minutes: The Surgery
5 minutes: Theory (surgical procedure, extra anatomy, surgical instruments, etc)
5 minutes: Questions

🖐 A few things to note! 🖐
- Learners can join us at any time. They will not start off "behind."
- Please check the parental guidance section. As a surgical class, some learners may be sensitive to content. I offer other alternative classes linked at the end of this description for students who would prefer fewer body parts.
- Students in vet tech/nurse and vet school learn all topics including surgery.
- Important to note, class is meant to be interactive. Students should arrive prepared to participate. I do not require students leave videos on after verification (Outschool Policy), but to get the most out of this very fast-paced class, quick participation is key.
- Learners do not need a secondary device to participate. Learners will rotate who speaks aloud in class and it is not required. The chat is also available.
- Per Outschool approval recommendations, I want to ensure students focus on encouraging decision-making skills and voicing opinions rather than the fine details of correct surgical procedure. This is not a medical diagnosis class, certified med school or vet school class. Students will not leave this class knowing how to perform surgery and should never try. These are things a veterinarian MIGHT do at some point after years of training (and this will be stated at the start of every class).

✨ Outschool and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) are very specific about guidelines and rules for diagnosing, treating, and prescribing. I am not a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and I do not practice medicine. For students who inquire about real animals and pets they own, I recommend visiting a local vet. Students will not be diagnosing, treating, or prescribing medications any real animals. ✨

I am an Animal Scientist who graduated from NC State in 2010 with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science Pre-Vet. When I completed schooling, I left with a, Ag. Buisness minor and an additional concentration in Equine Anatomy and Physiology of the Performance Horse. I completed additional coursework in Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and individual classes at U.C. Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine distance education in Equine Industry, Exercise Physiology, and Equine Welfare and Management.

I have worked at N.C. State University (which also has a veterinary science doctorate program) in the undergraduate university in Anatomy and Physiology as well as Equine Science.

I worked in veterinary medicine and animal science including various clinics and farms for 20 years.

I am ready and prepared for this course.
