色彩豊かな歴史上のダイナミックな女性たち: 絵を描いて学ぶ 4 日間のキャンプ (6 ～ 8 歳)

Each weekly session will focus on one woman who has made significant contributions to society in celebration of Women’s History Month. I will show the students how to create colorful, mixed media, collage portraits (abstract/realistic) in the likeness of each historical figure. Students will paint backgrounds with acrylic paint. They will layer the painting with torn paper, a photo/clipart (print out provided) of the featured historical figure, 3-D paint and at least one printed quotes. Students are encouraged to include more elements for added texture such as rhinestones, buttons, yarn, fabric, ribbon and newspaper/magazine clippings. Because of the collage technique we will be using, students will not have to know how to draw in order to produce beautiful, powerful, artistic pieces. 
We will apply this same mixed-media, paper collage painting technique to a portrait of each featured person. Consequently, students will grow in their artistic expression across all four paintings.

While we create and wait for paint to dry, I will share some interesting facts about the featured historical figure. We will explore her childhood, rise to fame and positive contributions to society. All the information will be age-appropriate with the aim of honoring the person's memory and whetting the students' appetites for learning about women’s history.

The following is the order I will execute the craft camp. I will introduce each figure to the students as we craft and learn highlighting a few of her accomplishments.

Session 1- Michelle Obama
Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Michelle Obama who was a successful administrator, lawyer and first African-American first lady of the United States.


Session 2- Madam C.J. Walker
Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Madam C.J. Walker who was a highly successful entrepreneur who developed haircare products for African-American Women.

Session 3- Katherine Johnson 
Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Katherine Johnson, a NASA mathematician,  who successfully helped with the calculations that sent the Apollo 11 to the moon.

Session 4- Rebecca Lee Crumpler
Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Rebecca Lee Crumpler, who was the first African-American woman to become a doctor in the U.S.
