The first thing I want to point out is that this class is not to promote any particular political viewpoint. Rather, its purpose is to make sure students understand United States history as experienced by groups of people who are underrepresented in the usual narrative taught in schools. The experiences of these groups is important to a complete understanding of early American history.

This class will cover the following topics during each session:

Overall Questions for this Course:

1) Why is it important for students to understand the experiences of all groups of people in United States history?

2) How does our understanding of history change if those groups are left out?

Week 1, Day 2
Main Topic: Native Americans of Eastern North America
Discussion: Stereotypes about Native Americans and how they distort American history

Week 2 Day 1
Main Topic: Important Women of Colonial America
Discussion: Why are women too often invisible in history?

Week 2, Day 2

Week 3, Day 1

Week 3, Day 2

Discussion: How were people treated who were not English?

Week 4, Day 1
Main Topic: Slave Rebellions and Indian Wars in Colonial North America
Discussion: Why do they happen, and why do they matter?

Week 4, Day 2
Wrap up class
Main Topic: How Different Groups Experience the American Revolution
Discussion: How would groups of people exploited by the English colonists of North America see the American Revolution?

The class lessons will combine two approaches to teaching. I will spend part of the class showing materials to students through slides (images, maps, tables, some text) to help them learn the basics that go with each lesson. The rest of the class will feature students discussing the discussion topic. I will guide these discussions and interact with the students for the duration of the discussions.

Some of the class content features violence, such as descriptions of wars between English colonists and their Native American neighbors. Also, because the history of slavery in America is a brutal one, this might be sensitive to some learners.
受講の前提条件
