Take $15 off during the month of February with the code SHANNNEW15 *This course contains 12 pre-recorded lessons over 3 weeks. As this is a self-paced course, learners have access to the course content for a year. * I remember taking literature courses in college and being AMAZED that other students had such intelligent things to say about the stories and poems we read for class. I understood what we read, but I wasn't sure that I had anything particularly interesting or insightful about the literature to contribute to discussions. This is the course that I wish I had had before taking literature courses at the college level. In this course, students will be encouraged to simply notice things about the text of their choice. Anyone can notice things! These can be simple, like the main character is young, the author uses long and complicated sentences, or the setting is Mississippi in the 1960s. From there, students will learn how to identify the most important "notices" from their reading. They will learn to connect their "notices" to literary elements like conflict, plot, and characterization. They will practice thinking about and explaining how their "notices" might affect the characters, or what their "notices" might mean about the author. Eventually, students will switch the process around to identify a claim about the text and find evidence to support that claim. Overall, the content deepens and builds throughout this course. By the end, students will have a solid process to follow to help them enter class prepared for discussion AND to assist them with finding claims about a story that could be used as theses for essays. Because the goal of this course is to prepare students for discussions, I request that student work be submitted as a video or voice recording. This will help students feel more confident about sharing their ideas aloud. However, I will accept written or typed work as well. Students will have worksheets to guide them through the class processes, but I would love to hear them talk about what they wrote down or thought about! This is a self-paced course. Students will have access to four lessons over 3 weeks, which totals 12 lessons. There are additional activities and enrichment for students to complete along with those 12 lessons. There is a lot of flexibility with self-paced courses. If your student requires more time to complete the work, they can take as much time as they need. Students also have the flexibility to choose whatever novel they'd like to read in order to practice the course materials. I recommend the novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." The reading level might be low for your learner, but there are a lot of nuances to the young narrator. The resources in this course mention 12 "chapters," but your learner can split their novel up in whatever way seems logical. I am a very energetic and upbeat educator, and I believe your student will feel that through my instruction videos for each lesson. I do my best to respond to student messages and submissions within 36 week day hours. I do not work on the weekends. Please send me a message if you have any questions about this course! I look forward to working with your learner.
