このクラスで学べること

OVERVIEW: This class is a social club for children with diabetes who want to connect with others and make friends who share a similar experience. Students are asked to speak about their identity and interests as it relates to their medical disability, and how it relates to other aspects of their lives or personality. The main purpose is to make friends, "dia-buddies"!

Here is a list of class activities. Every single class will have a segment for show-and-tell.
Intro to Diabuddies: get to know our friends!
Storybook read-aloud: read about a character who has diabetes!
I Spy… : find some diabetes supplies in a picture!
Minute to win it games: complete silly challenges!
Would you rather...: share your opinion about silly scenarios!
Trivia- Wrong Answers Only: give a funny, incorrect answer to simple questions!

We will be discussing diabetes to share our experiences, joys, new gadgets. We also have fun sharing about school, hobbies, new toys or games, and family and pets. Students are not allowed to give medical advice.*

EXPERIENCE: This class is designed for children who already have diagnosed diabetes, looking to make "diabuddies" (buddies who have diabetes.) So they should be able to speak about their experience having the disease on a very basic level.

*Disclaimer: The teacher will not be giving any medical advice or therapy whatsoever. Students will be instructed to not give any advice to each other. This is a class designed to provide connection and support, not advice or therapy. Example: "I like the Omnipod because it is small," versus "You should increase your basal rates on your pump by 5%."

教師の専門知識と資格
I have had type 1 diabetes since 2001. I have years of experience working with children and teens who have diabetes and similar medical disabilities. I am a volunteer mentor for newly diagnosed patients. I also offer support to parents of newly diagnosed young children with diabetes. I have created, hosted and monitored several support groups for both teens and young adults who have diabetes. I currently create and sell diabetes-themed artwork and designs that uplift and support the diabetic community.
I am the lead director of a local youth group, and have been involved with the organization for 4 years. I meet weekly with my youth group to discuss, connect, and support them. I have also worked with children as young as 2 with medical, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
This class is not a therapy session or to receive medical advice. It can be viewed as a social club. Although the students have a medical diagnosis, we will not be discussing management of the disease itself. There will be no medical advice given whatsoever. The teacher is a 20 year type 1 diabetic and T1D advocate, not a therapist or medical doctor.
