このクラスで学べること
Students will be taught: Every lesson will begin with a real-world problem that will help students make sense of what a decimal is and how to represent them accurately. Topics Covered: Day 1 students will develop models to represent decimals. Day 2 Students will solve word problems to create models of decimals and connect them to equations for addition. Day 3 Students will solve word problems to create models of decimals and connect them to equations for addition and subtractions. Day 4 Students will solve word problems to create models of decimals and connect them to equations for addition and multiplication. Day 5 Students will solve word problems to create models of decimals and connect them to equations for division. Class Structure: Students will be able to solve 3-4 times word problems using different numbers in order to ensure they understand the problem type, the meaning and value of a decimal, and how to solve problems involving decimals. Students will be introduced to a new representation everyday i.e., ten frames, number lines, and ratio tables. I will teach: using a problem solving approach that encourages independence, productive struggle, and peer feedback. Students will share representations of the strategies they used to solve the problems with their classmates. I, the teacher will coach students along, providing specific feedback, and asking students to connect their informal strategies to different models, 3-4 students will explain their reasoning or process during the lessons. My Teaching Style: I use a Cognitively Guided Approach in that students will begin by using their intuitive/informal understanding to solve problems. I will connect their informal strategies to more sophisticated and formal strategies i.e., ratio tables. Students understanding should grow incrementally over the course of 5 days. Learners will interact: through discussion of the word problems, explaining their strategies, asking questions of their peers and myself. Participants should have the basic concept of fractions in place prior to taking this class.
学習到達目標
Students will learn how to create a model of a decimal using ten frames, label their decimal models, create equations that match their models, and connect their models to alternative models i.e. number lines and ratio tables.

教師の専門知識と資格
I am offering a course on decimals because this is an area where many students, classroom teachers, and parents struggle to understand the concept at a deeper level. In addition, many textbooks and curriculums offer up inaccurate representations of fractions that can limit students' understanding and/or deliver conflicting ideas.
