このクラスで学べること

(Please read the entire description. A supply list is provided below.)

Crochet 101 is a hands-on crochet lesson designed specifically for absolute beginners to the art of crochet. Students will learn how to make a slip knot, chain, and do basic crochet stitches, as well as learning about the basic tools and supplies needed to crochet.

Students may enroll or unenroll from the class at any time, allowing them to progress at their own speed and comfort level. A relaxed, sociable learning environment is encouraged to help students tackle the challenges of learning a completely new skill, and I will be available at all times during the lesson to provide additional instruction, answer questions, and offer support. If students have any questions or concerns outside of the regularly-scheduled class meeting, they will be encouraged to message me directly and I will answer them before the next class period if possible.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an ongoing, learner-directed class. This means that at any given time, some students who have taken the class before may be working on more advanced projects while newer students are learning the basics simultaneously. I keep my class sizes small so that I can spend time with each student, answering their questions, teaching them new skills, and familiarizing myself with their aptitudes and goals. **I will require engagement and input from the learner** in order to properly meet their needs during the weekly meeting, and I allow them to do so by either asking me directly or using Zoom's built-in chat feature.

学習到達目標

Students should ultimately feel confident in their ability to make a slipknot, crochet a chain, and ultimately produce a simple single or double crochet stitch (US terminology). Students may enroll in the ongoing class as many or as few times as they feel is necessary to accomplish this level of proficiency.

その他の情報

受講に必要なもの
--Required supplies:
• Crochet hooks (I recommend Size "J" or "6.00mm" for beginners)
• Worsted/Medium weight acrylic yarn. (Avoid dark colors like black and fuzzy yarns for beginners, as they can be difficult to work with.)
• Scissors
--Additional supplies:
If your learner is ready to progress to more advanced projects, some of the following supplies may be useful to have:
• Yarn needles (For weaving in ends and attaching pieces)
• Long, ball-head sewing pins (For holding pieces in place while they are being attached)
• Polyester fiberfill (for stuffed toys and pillows)
• Plastic safety eyes for stuffed toys
• Stitch markers (For making it easier to count stitches and do complex patterns)
• Crochet hook organizer (For keeping hooks in an organized space where they are easy to find)

Greetings! I'm Lydia Holloway, a professional graphic designer, illustrator, writer, and educator. You can call me "Miss Lydia" and my pronouns are she/her!

I've been crafting, drawing, crocheting, sewing, and basically learning as much as I can about as many things as I can for as long as I can remember. As passionate as I am about creative pursuits, I am even more excited to share what I have learned with others. I have been teaching on OutSchool since 2020, and have taught enrichment activities to K-6th (USA) students since 2011. Prior to that, I was a private tutor, teaching arts and crafts out of my home.

I cover a wide range of subjects and have extremely diverse interests, but I have one simple, fundamental belief behind my myriad pursuits: I want to learn how to make, grow, and produce as many things for myself as I can. And I want to share that knowledge with others!

I was born and raised in Kansas, the daughter of two educators, one teaching junior high science and the other teaching art and elementary English. Although I initially pursued a career in graphic design, the call to teaching was too strong to resist. In 2011, I fell into what would end up being my dream job: assisting with the local after-school program. I remained with the program for a decade, teaching arts, crafts, science, and more to a diverse group of in-person learners.

I believe the greatest gift we can give the next generation is the ability to create, not just in the practical sense, but in the sense of overcoming mental and emotional hurdles that would otherwise stifle us. I teach my students to create freely, for the joy of it, as well as giving them the practical skills they need to accomplish their goals. We are empowered by knowing how to create things for ourselves, and we are enriched by the freedom to create without self-consciousness. Art is neither good nor bad: it simply is, and by creating it, we are allowed to "just be" as well.
