In today's media-saturated world, the ability to analyze content critically isn't just an academic skill—it's an essential life tool. This course empowers students to move beyond passive consumption to become active analysts of their chosen media, whether they're interested in short-form content like TikTok videos and news articles or longer works like novels and documentaries. Students will develop crucial analytical skills including identifying target audiences, recognizing persuasion techniques, and understanding how creator choices influence message delivery. Throughout our eight weeks together, we'll master the art of uncovering both explicit and implicit messages in media. Students will learn to recognize emotional triggers, analyze structural choices, and understand how timing and platform selection impact content effectiveness. Using their preferred media types, participants will practice these skills through engaging discussions and hands-on analysis exercises. This personalized approach allows students to explore topics they're passionate about while developing sophisticated analytical frameworks they can apply to any media they encounter. The course culminates in a final presentation where students demonstrate their mastery by conducting a deep analysis of their chosen media piece. They'll showcase their ability to identify creator intentions, recognize target audience considerations, and articulate how various techniques work together to create meaning. This presentation not only reinforces analytical skills but also develops public speaking abilities, confidence in defending interpretations, and leadership in guiding meaningful discussions. By course end, students will possess a toolkit of analytical techniques that will serve them well in academic pursuits and daily media consumption.
