このクラスで学べること
In this on-going class, we will learn various art techniques and then apply these to create mixed media art journal pages. Each week will focus on a different technique. Each week consists of a demonstration and lesson on an artistic technique, followed by work time for learners where they can practice this technique and create an art journal page. Because all artists work at different paces, learners may not complete their entire page by the end of class, but they will have gotten a good start on it and have all the tools and knowledge to complete it on their own. At the end of class learners will have the opportunity to share their progress if they choose to do so. All levels are welcome in this class, and no prior experience is needed. Art journaling provides the opportunity to play, get creative, and express your thoughts and emotions through visual means. I approach this class from a place of exploration and inquisitiveness (What happens if I mix these colors? I wonder what it would look like if I added this paint here?) and encourage learners to do the same. A list of supplies students will need for each class will be posted in the classroom each week, and a general list of supplies can be found in the "materials" section below. Learners will be encouraged to get creative with supplies around their homes, as well as to use recycled materials to create their unique works of art. Topics and Techniques Covered: Jan 12 - mark-making and pattern creating Jan 19 - collage papers and collage clusters Jan 26 - packing tape image transfers Feb 2 - watercolor mushrooms and flowers, and other 'focal points' Feb 9 - stamp-making and mono-prints Feb 16 - playing with text and words

There are some basic supplies students will need every week, as well as some specific supplies based on each technique (I'll post specific supplies needed each week in the classroom). Here's a general list of what learners will need. I encourage learners to get creative and use what they have around the house. If you have any questions about a supply, please let me know. First off, you will want some form of substrate or base for the pieces you create. You may use any of the following: * Sketchbook, pad, or art journal (preferably a heavier weight of paper such as mixed media or watercolor weight) * Canvases or canvas boards (you can often find these at the dollar store - I suggest at least a 5x7 size or larger) * Altered journal created by you, using an old book, magazine, etc. (there are lots of YouTube videos available that show you how you can do this) Basic art supplies you will need are below. Don’t feel like you need to purchase a bunch of things you don’t already have - get creative with what you already have at home: * Collage materials (such as old magazines, junk mail, old paperwork, etc - raid your recycle bin!) * Masking tape or washi tape * Scissors * Glue/adhesive (I prefer glue sticks, but you can also use things like Mod Podge, liquid glue, YES paste, etc. depending on what you have) * Pens/pencils * An old credit card or gift card * Paint in a variety of colors (I prefer acrylic - you generally can get inexpensive tubes at any art store and most big "box stores." The dollar store often also has small containers of tempera paint) * Watercolors * Paintbrushes * Colored pencils / crayons / markers / oil pastels * Various goodies such as stickers, glitter, stencils, stamps, inks, etc. * Covering to protect your workspace and your clothes
