So, come on over and have a seat at the campfire - let's talk about this class. :) What will be taught? Our teaching will vary from week to week, especially as students find their comfort level and begin asking questions. Generally speaking, we'll focus on allowing learners to ask questions and observe each week as we adventure together. What topics will you cover? Life in the Sandhills of Nebraska is always changing: We'll discuss the weather and why it is how it is, we'll talk about the creatures that we discover along the way - at times we'll stay put and tell stories around the fire, and at others, we'll be up and on the move looking for animal tracks or building tools to use for the next class. How is your class structured? While the class itself will often vary in format, it's very important to me that one aspect of the structure remains the same: Me. The Fred Rogers model is essential in my way of teaching in that I strongly believe that learners need to return to a safe and engaging learning environment each time in order to invest, and once they do... they'll learn. An essential part of this is having a central figure who greets them all the same way each day, puts on his ranch coat, and then goes out to adventure with them all. In the end, he bids them all a fond farewell, and leaves them excited to come back for more. How much will learners get to interact? Ideally, everyone will be able to interact during each class period. Questions and answers are the heart of an adventure like this one.
学習到達目標
Students will learn cooperation and communication skills both while sharing their own ideas and asking questions of Sully.
Learners will be encouraged to organize their thoughts before asking questions: This is a life skill that pops back up in everything from speaking on the telephone to life in the college classroom.
その他の情報
学習ニーズ
My background is in Special Education so I work hard to create an environment where everyone is able to both participate and thrive. This makes it far more fun for me, and I love to see kids light up when they have a valued place in class.
保護者へのお知らせ
Our time together on the ranch will not contain any content that is violent or scary to our learners.
受講の前提条件
There are no prerequisite requirements for this learning space - if kids are as fascinated by life on the ranch as I was at that age, they're fully qualified! Campfires? Cowboys? Story time? Come join!
外部リソース
学習者は、Outschoolが提供する基本ツール以外のアプリやウェブサイトを使用する必要はありません。
使用する教材
There is no source material required for our class.
If a learner brings up a question that leads to the need for something that we can all read together, I'll simply list this for parents after our class so that everyone is on the same page. All other materials will be provided in the week prior - for example, if students might like to read along to our campfire story, they'll be able to do so.
教師の専門知識と資格
My background is in Special Education, earning two Masters degrees in 1997, and then proceeding to teach students in settings as diverse as a lock down rehabilitation center for gang members and felons to Living History teaching and curriculum building with a nationally known museum. I've taught elementary students and college students, non-traditional students and students who didn't even know that they were learning. :)
