Calling all visual learners! This class will teach the process of creating Cornell Notes and the strategies of reviewing and reflecting on notes so scholars retain upwards of 90% of the content. Scholars repeatedly engaging with their notes is critical to their retention and thus it's recommended that they attend all four classes and at the end, assess how much of the information they retained. We'll use the common five step process of - Record - Reduce - Recite - Reflect - Review The recite and reflect steps require scholars to use inquiry, critical thinking, occasional research and make connections so they aren't merely reading to remember, but actually processing and understanding their notes. Developing these skills in addition to process of elimination can help scholars increase their test scores. In the first class we'll cover the Cornell Note setup using Google Docs and a regular piece of paper. Students will learn the format and organization of Cornell Notes and the process we'll use to ensure they retain the information they've written. Scholars will be presented with information and begin taking notes independently. In the second class, scholars will continue or finish taking notes if they haven't already. We will compare what information they wrote down with the information I identified as note worthy. They'll then annotate and edit (reduce) their notes for efficiency and completeness. Lastly, students will use inquiry to create questions about the material that will lead them a greater understanding. The third class will focus on reciting and reflecting to delve deeper into the the scholars' critical thinking and inquiry skills to expound upon what they learned from the material so it becomes relevant to them. The more exposure and interaction scholars have with the text, the more likely they are to retaining a substantial amount of the information. In the fourth and final class, scholars will interact with and review their notes one last time before taking a fun Kahoot! assessment to test how well they processed and retained the information from the past several weeks.

I am credentialed in the state of California to teach English and spent years teaching scholars how to master Cornell Notes. I was trained in and have taught AVID, a college and career preparation course which heavily emphasizes the use of Cornell Notes. AVID boasts that 93% of scholars who participate in their program meet four year college entrance requirements. I've received four college degrees, earning both summa cum laude and cum laude.
