Learning how to read and write notation is an essential tool for the student if he/she wants to continue their chess skill level. All chess books and chess websites indicate the chess moves with Algebraic Notation and all chess students need to be knowledgeable about this. If the student ever participates in a United States Chess Federation Rated Tournament, they will be required to keep track of their moves, either by paper and pencil, or electronically.

Students will receive a chess puzzle sheet to be printed out.  The chess puzzle  sheet will be discussed in the last few minutes of class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.

A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.
