Welcome Families! Did you know that both the author and the illustrator tell the story of a picture book? Does your child know that? Does your child know that SHE or HE can help tell the story even before s/he can read the words? This ongoing class will extend your child's comprehension skills, build confidence, and bring joy to his or her reading! Each class will start with personal introductions. LEARNING GOAL: Students will implement or witness the use of the 12 Systems of Strategic Action that are needed to become a strong reader: word solving, monitoring and correcting, searching for and using information, summarizing, maintaining fluency, adjusting, predicting, making connections, inferring, synthesizing, analyzing, and critiquing a text (Fountas & Pinnell, 2008).
As an Elementary Educator and a person with several Reading Specialist Certificates, my expertise shines in emphasizing comprehension strategies and embedding them into the conversation that I guide during the read-aloud. Comprehension skills serve as the foundation for all pre-readers, beginning readers, and advanced readers. These skills set the stage for word solving, self-correcting, fluent reading, and a competent reading rate in any literature setting.

- 1 three-ring binder (1.5" is plenty big)... this will be called a "Writing Journal" - 3 sharpened pencils - an assortment of colored pencils *I will be sending you pages to add to your three-ring binder (Writing Journal).
Since the read-alouds are thematically planned, books will be relevant to calendar events. Starting in February, our classes will land on and read about President's Day, Black History Month, and Easter. Future sessions will continue to portray literature relevant to calendar events.
