Class Experience

Students will work on intermediate AMC 8 problems with teacher support. Each session includes:

1. An introduction to the day’s topic.
2. Guided practice on 6-8 problems aligned with AMC 8 content.
3. Group discussions to explore strategies and solutions.

Students are encouraged to use the chat feature to ask questions during the lesson. The teacher will guide students through each problem, explaining common mistakes, advanced strategies, and how to think critically about solutions.

This class is designed for students who are familiar with AMC 8 topics and want to dive deeper into more complex problems. The pace is medium, giving students the opportunity to reflect and master challenging concepts.

We will leave the easier questions for students to work out on their own.  Or they can take the Beginner AMC 8 class that will cover the easier questions. 

Extremely advanced students may want to study on their own, and attend classes from time to time for a refresher.

We want students to be prepared for the AMC test. We recommend that students enter the competition when ready. Early sign-ups are in October and can be set up through local schools.

Pre-Requisites and Placement Test

Students should have completed the 7th-grade math curriculum or equivalent and feel comfortable with foundational problem-solving techniques.

Sample Questions

Here are some sample questions similar to what we cover in class. If your student can answer correctly  2 out of 4 of these questions, then the class is a good fit.  You can also take the pre-assessment as noted above.


1. Two 600 mL pitchers contain orange juice. One pitcher is 1/3 full and the other pitcher is 2/5 full. Water is added to fill each pitcher completely, then both pitchers are poured into one large container. What fraction of the mixture in the large container is orange juice?

2. Three friends have a total of 6 identical pencils, and each one has at least one pencil. In how many ways can this happen?

3. Spinners A (numbers 1, 2, 3, 4) and B (numbers 1, 2, 3) are spun. On each spinner, the arrow is equally likely to land on each number. What is the probability that the product of the two spinners' numbers is even?

4. At a party there are only single women and married men with their wives. The probability that a randomly selected woman is single is 2/5. What fraction of the people in the room are married men?

"The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics [and more] from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables.
