Topics covered will be all disciplines included in Civil Engineering. Each week a different discipline will be introduced. We will discuss what that person does, some problems they may need to solve, and even what math/science they may use to solve those problems. Pictures and slides may be used as well as class interaction. An experiment will be assigned each class (except the first and last classes) and will be briefly discussed at the beginning of the following class. Included in the weekly list below are links to each experiment or project. These will be discussed in the class as well. Materials are included in the supply list for each week. Week 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering Week 2: Environmental Engineering Week 3: Water Resources Engineering Watershed/floodplain experiment Week 4: Geotechnical Engineering (soil engineers) Soil Core sampling experiment Week 5: Transportation Engineering Experiment/Project: circular motion experiment Week 6: Structural Engineering Experiment/Project: Truss Bridge Project Week 7: Construction Engineering Experiment/Project: write down the process and order of building (This can be demonstrated with toys or household items) Week 8: How do they all work together? Week 2: 2 tin pans, vegetable oil, dawn dish soap, medicine dropper, spoon, paper towels, cotton balls. Week 3: water, measuring tape Week 4: Play doh, kinetic sand (can use real sand/soil), small cup, straw Week 5: lazy susan, can use a book, box or piece or paper, anything that can be spun. Small object such as a bead, pen cap, etc., cardboard Week 6: craft sticks, glue (hot glue or craft glue), zip ties, rope, caribener and fabric (to hang weight). Options for weight: hanging scale, pennies or other coins to use as weights, plate weights
