このクラスで学べること
This course is an ongoing series of private chess lessons. During the first session, we will assess the learner's knowledge, abilities, interests, and goals related to chess. Based on the learner's preferences, we will create a customized approach to learning or improving at chess that will be most beneficial and engaging to them, and more importantly, fun! Core aspects of the approach to chess study in this course will include theoretical endgames, middle game plans and strategies, opening principles, game analysis, tactical puzzles, and more. With a student-centered teaching approach, we will let the learner's interests guide our direction as we explore the game together. If the student is most interested in openings, we will spend time developing an opening repertoire. If the student is fascinated by endgames, we will study endgames. For beginners who are not sure where to start, I am happy to provide direction by covering basic ideas in all phases of the game to help new players understand and enjoy chess as quickly as possible. I offer 25 minute and 55 minute private lessons. Scheduling can be flexible. If you would like to register for a 25 minute class during an available 55 minute posting, or vice versa, please message me and I may be able to accommodate. Similarly, if no current class times are convenient for you, we may be able to find a time that works.
学習到達目標
Due to the nature of private lessons, the learning goals for this course will be different for each student. However, it is my goal that the following are a common experience for all of my students:
- Fun... while it is competitive, at the end of the day, chess is a game!
- Intellectually engaging experience every session where the learner is challenged to think critically
- Build a holistic understanding of chess that includes the ability to analyze positions, enjoy playing, and appreciate the game

While not required, I recommend creating an account on chess.com to allow us to use the site's classroom feature during lessons. This empowers the learner to move pieces on our virtual chess board and makes the lesson more interactive and engaging. If you wish to participate without creating a chess.com account that will work too, but the learner will have to verbally tell me where they would like to move pieces rather than actually making the moves themselves. In this case, you do not need to create an account or do anything other than sign into the zoom meeting (all instruction will go through my screen share of an analysis board).
Creating an account on chess.com is free. It requires an email address (not visible to others) and the creation of a username that other members of the site will be able to see. You are not required to attach any other personal information to your chess.com account, including your name. The only use of your chess.com account during lessons will be to join me on an interactive analysis board in "classroom" (one of chess.com's features). If your student would like to use chess.com to play chess online outside of class, or take advantage of any of the site's other features (puzzles, game analysis, etc.) and you are concerned about online safety, I recommend enabling the "safe mode" feature of your account. Doing this will disable chat, friend requests, and any possible interaction with other players online. Here is a link to a chess.com article showing how to enable this feature https://support.chess.com/article/2003-privacy-settings. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns about this, or would like assistance creating an account on chess.com. Again, this is NOT required.
受講に必要なもの

教師の専門知識と資格
Hello, my name is Will. I teach chess on Outschool because chess is a lifelong hobby of mine, and I am passionate about helping young people discover and enjoy this beautiful game. Chess teaches critical thinking, time management, patience, decision making, sportsmanship, and many other valuable skills. Learning this fun and timeless game is a great way to engage your mind and improve your life, regardless of whether or not you wish to play competitively.
I learned chess at age 5 and played as much as I could in my elementary school club and scholastic tournaments. I rediscovered the game in college and have played in many rated tournaments over the past decade, achieving a peak US Chess Federation rating over 1900 (Chess.com 2100 and Lichess 2200). Whether my learners are striving to become the next world champion, beat their older siblings, or are simply curious about the game, I am happy to help them on their chess journey!
I offer 30 minute and 60 minute private lessons. Scheduling can be flexible. If you would like to register for a 30 minute class during an available 60 minute posting, or vice versa, please message me and I may be able to accommodate. Similarly, if no current class times are convenient for you, we may be able to find a time that works.
