NaCl, KBr, Fe(NO3)2- if those just look like letters and numbers to you, you're not alone. Chemistry has its own language and vocabulary, and this class will teach you how to speak and read it. By the end of this course, students will be able to: - Write the name of an ionic or covalent compound if given the formula - Write the formula of an ionic or covalent compound if given the name - Name basic straight chain hydrocarbons - Name binary acids and common oxyacids --Week 1-- * Video 1: Introduction to chemical nomenclature and its importance * Video 2: Ionic compounds vs. covalent compounds- how to tell them apart * Practice worksheet: Ionic or covalent --Week 2-- * Video 1: Basics of naming covalent compounds * Video 2: Some more challenging examples of naming covalent compounds * Practice worksheet: Naming covalent compounds --Week 3-- * Video 1: Basics of naming ionic compounds * Video 2: The transition metals * Video 3: Polyatomic ions * Video 4: Naming acids * Practice worksheet: Naming ionic compounds and acids -- Week 4-- * Video 1: Naming straight chain alkanes * Video 2: Naming straight chain alkenes * Video 3: Naming straight chain alkynes * Practice worksheet: Naming straight chain hydrocarbons --Week 5-- * Video 1: Writing formulas of covalent compounds from names * Video 2: Writing formulas of ionic compounds from names * Video 3: Writing formulas of hydrocarbons from names * Practice worksheet: Writing formulas from names --Week 6-- * Video 1: Real-life applications of naming chemical compounds * Practice worksheet: putting it all together There will be an optional (parent-graded) quiz offered at the end of the course. Course expectations: This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week, you will watch the videos (via unlisted YouTube link which will be posted in the classroom) and work through the practice problems. Once you have completed the practice problems, you will upload a photo or scan of your answers to either the classroom (preferred) or directly message it to the instructor. There will be a weekly thread where you can post videos or photos or messages asking for help on the practice problems- students are encouraged to help each other, and the instructor will check in daily to answer questions as well. This is not the kind of course where you can sit and watch the videos and learn- you should be working through the practice problems each week in order to get the most benefit out of the course. The instructor will always be available via message. I am also willing to set up office hours via Zoom video chat if they are requested by a section of the class.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and five years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
