Ron Roy's Calendar Mystery books are quick, funny, and best of they all they are real detective stories. Each month I like to host a book club to discuss the corresponding book! With a level N reading level from Scholastic, and plentiful illustrations these are fantastic for readers beginning to show interest in well developed chapter books. Generally ages 6-9. In this book club we will meet once a week to discuss the assigned chapters of reading. Discussions will delve into story structure and character development. We will investigate challenging vocabulary, and explore the world of figurative language and plot devices. Through all of this we are going to have a lot of fun. We will play games, do crafts, and we will learn to apply inference skills as we try to solve the mystery. Each meeting we will split our time roughly as follows: 15 minutes of instructor led discussion 10 minutes collecting evidence and making inferences as we try to solve the mystery 10 minutes discussing literary devices and identifying figurative language 10 minutes on a fun, social, thematic activity either in the form of a game or a simple craft

Students will further their reading comprehension and inference skills as they develop a connection with books and reading.
We will also work on our social skills as we practice active listening, and learn to respond to peers with meaningful, open ended questions.

Learners with high comprehension levels that still find independent reading to be a chore may benefit from having an adult reading along with them. You may read aloud to them, or perhaps take turns reading aloud to each other.
Scissors may also be required for craft projects

-A copy of Ron Roy's October Ogre (This can be borrowed from a library, or purchased on Amazon) -printables from the classroom Some general craft supplies such as colored paper, markers or colored pencils, scissors, glue I like to utilize Kahoots as a fun way to test our comprehension and retention skills! It will be handy to have a secondary device with a web browser available.

I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.レビュー
