Key topics include: Environmentalism: The central conflict revolves around the fight to save the endangered burrowing owls from destruction due to development. Friendship: The story highlights the importance of friendship as the main character, Roy, builds connections with other kids who are also trying to protect the owls. Bullying: Roy faces bullying from other students at his new school, adding another layer to his challenges. Moral dilemmas: The characters grapple with ethical choices regarding the construction project and the owls' well-being. Community activism: The story showcases how individuals can make a difference by taking action to protect the environment. Coming of age: Roy experiences personal growth as he navigates through these challenges and learns valuable lessons about responsibility and taking a stand. How will the class be structured? We will meet once per week for 45 minutes. Each week we will cover 3 chapters and toward the end the Epilogue and culminating project. During the 45 minutes we will check in, discuss the chapters we read independently, answer questions, talk about and map literary elements, use mind maps, have time for learner sharing, and wrap up covering the next weeks expectations. How will I teach and what is my teaching style? For a book club, my role will be to facilitate discussion. I would have students lead discussion after giving a prompt. For a Book Club, my teaching style would be student centered/student led. I would be a vessel for their learning and aid in keeping discussions going in the right direction and make sure they are understanding the theme. plot and important points. How much interaction?
