The learners and I will explore the insect world as we discuss the traits of different insects. I will show pictures of insects and, after going over the life cycle of a butterfly, I will read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". I will ask questions of the learners to see what their knowledge is of the insect world and describe attributes of different bugs. I will also talk about why some creepy crawlies are good for the environment. After our discussion is over, we will make 'buggy' snacks using the items listed below.

Celery sticks Red and/or green grapes, green olives, blueberries, cherry tomatoes (You may use any one of these items, or all of them. See the Class Image picture.) A few slices of fruit such as apples, oranges, lemons, or kiwi (for the snails) and a cashew for the snail head and eyes) Cream cheese and/or peanut butter to spread onto celery sticks with a knife or spoon Candy eyes ($3.99 at WalMart) These are optional, as you can use other small edible items such as mini chocolate chips or tube of writing icing for eyes.
