In this 10-week literature course, students will explore two thought-provoking dystopian novels: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Scythe by Neal Shusterman. These novels present gripping, high-stakes worlds that will challenge readers to consider various themes such as power, morality, survival, and the human condition. Through guided discussions, analysis, and writing assignments, students will engage with these texts critically and creatively. This is a discussion focused class and all reading will be done outside of class. Students will receive discussion questions each week that will guide our class time together and these questions should be reviewed before class in order to be adequately prepared. Discussions will focus on the philosophical and societal implications of these themes of death, ethics, morality, government oppression and survival situations but parents should review the material on Common Sense Media to ensure it aligns with their family’s values. Essential Questions: 📚 What role does government play in shaping individual freedoms? 📚 How do dystopian societies reflect real-world issues? 📚 What is the cost of survival, and how does it affect personal morality? 📚 How do characters in both novels grapple with ethical dilemmas? 📚 What do these novels suggest about power, control, and resistance? 📚 How do the protagonists challenge or reinforce societal norms? 📚 What is the significance of death in shaping society (Scythe) versus the significance of entertainment and control (The Hunger Games)? This class will push students to think deeply about the societies we live in, the role of authority, and how ethical decisions shape our world. Parents and students should be prepared for mature discussions, but the goal is to engage critically with literature that challenges perspectives and encourages thoughtful reflection.
