Come fall in love with this classic story as we read and discuss this timeless story of the resilience, hope, and courage of little Sara Crewe this 5 week book club. When Sara Crewe arrives at Miss Minchin's London boarding school, she seems just like a real little princess. She wears beautiful clothes, has gracious manners, and tells the most wonderful stories. Then one day, Sara suddenly becomes penniless. Now she must wear rags, sleep in the school's dreary attic, and work for her living. Sara is all alone, but keeps telling herself that she can still be a princess inside, if only she tries hard enough. Despite her difficult situation, Sara remains resilient and kind, embodying the true spirit of an imaginative and independent princess. As she endures the hardships, her inner strength and courage are tested and ultimately rewarded. This timeless story of resilience and hope will touch your student’s heart, and stay with them forever. A Little Princess, by j Francis Hodgson Burnett, is one of the best-selling books ever written and continues to touch the hearts of readers of all ages. I can’t wait to share with your students this delightful classic! In this multi-day class, we will meet once weekly for 5 weeks to dive deep. During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively! Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 19 chapters in this book. The book is also available as an audiobook! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, applying critical thinking, discussing characters, plot, and other literary aspects, designing a book cover, and ending with a fun game, all related to the book. Snacks are always welcome! Please read chapters 1-5 BEFORE class! Please read chapters 6-10 BEFORE class! Please read chapters 11-15 BEFORE class! Please read chapters 10-15 BEFORE class! Please read chapters 16-19 BEFORE class!

Ms. Carol has been a voracious reader since childhood. Her lifelong passion is to cultivate curiosity in children, and to inspire a lifelong love of learning, especially the reading and enjoyment of beautiful literature!
It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly and tactfully touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, servants, bullying, and unkindness in this story. I make every attempt to model and teach critical thinking, regardless of what book we are reading.
There are also the following areas of concern that will be addressed in class: there is a neighbor who is from India and there is a biased, and stereotypical description of him. Racism is never tolerated in my class, even the an imaginary world of books. We will discuss and apply critical thinking skills to these and all aspects of this book.
Ms. Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read.
