For so many, Christmas Time is the most wonderful time of year regardless of religious/spiritual affiliation; It's the time of year when snow and gingerbread cookies are the ultimate pleasure and families all over travel to congregate over food and cheer. Over the course of 4 weeks, students will dive into how the history of this holiday has intersected with the racial and class realities of Black people throughout American history. We'll answer key questions like: How did enslaved Africans celebrate Christmas? What was the role of Black media in creating widespread Black Christmas traditions? (and so much more!) Together, we'll explore these topics and how they continue to impact present day Black history/culture celebrations around Christmas Time. After diving into primary sources like magazine advertisements and cultural recipes, students will be ready to plan their own winter celebrations! Course Overview: Week 1: Christmas History: Origins Across The Diaspora Week 2: Black Christmas History & The Politics of Yule Tide Joy Week 3: Black Magazines + Pop Culture Celebrate Christmas Week 4: A Very Black Winter: Christmas, Kwanzaa and More Weekly videos will be available every Sunday at 12:00 AM PST
