The five-paragraph essay is a foundational writing structure that prepares students for longer and more complex essays. This course aims to expand beyond the basic structure learned in the Mastering the Five Paragraph Essay course. Students will engage in both formal and informal writing, with integrated mini grammar and vocabulary lessons. All submitted work will receive detailed feedback, and revisions are required to ensure continuous improvement. If your child is not yet familiar with essay structuring, please start with this one-time course: Mastering the Five Paragraph Essay. 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹e: January 5-11: Expository Essay (600-800 words) January 12-18: Creative Writing (Two-page minimum) January 19 - 25: Persuasive Essay (600-800 words) January 26- February 1: Opposing Viewpoints (550-word minimum) February 2-8: Writing a Mystery (Word count based on prompt choice) February 9-15: Analysis Essay (Four paragraphs) February 16-22: Copy That Dialogue February 23 - March 1: Research Paper + Annotated Bibliography Additional sessions will include topics such as college entrance essays, application essays, short stories, mystery/solve assignments, PSAs, contract writing, blog posts, and biographies. Some assignments may change depending on the needs of the learners. Learners will have ample opportunities to interact with both the instructor and each other during our sessions. Each class begins with an icebreaker activity to help students feel comfortable and build a sense of community. The lesson will then segue into the day's topic, which will be delivered through a combination of lectures and slides. During the lectures, questions will be posed to engage students and ensure understanding, fostering an interactive learning environment. Additionally, mini grammar lessons will be provided as needed to address specific challenges and improve writing skills. This course pairs well with: Discovering the Short Story: Reading and Discussion. Note: Learners will have a week to submit their first draft. Work will be returned with feedback. Learners will then have another 3-5 days to submit their revisions. While learners may still choose to write a five-paragraph essay, there will be an expected word count minimum or page numbers depending on the week, with 12-point font and double-spacing for formatting.

𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗱𝗲 (𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿):
I started my path to teaching in college when I volunteered with AmeriCorps. I went on to teach in traditional public schools after I completed my M.Ed and received my teaching license, but I quickly learned the school environment was not the ideal setting for myself or my child. That is when I transitioned to homeschooling and teaching online. I have been teaching writing course for fifteen years. My primary objective in each class is to help the learners feel comfortable and gain confidence in their writing.
All Academy teachers have experience and background in providing writing instruction with continued professional development and training.
