GarageBand を使った音楽制作と作曲入門: サマーキャンプ!

Has your child ever been interested in creating their own music? Have they heard of GarageBand but felt overwhelmed or didn’t know how to use the application? 

When I was a kid, I was really interested in music production but I didn’t have the right program or a teacher to help me. Anytime I tried to make an at-home recording, my songs never came out the way I wanted them to and I felt discouraged about my music. Well thankfully since then, Apple made GarageBand!

GarageBand is one of the most innovating and easy-to-use music production softwares of all time. These lessons break down the steps of how to use GarageBand into tiny, digestible, and age-appropriate bits so that they can learn to create their own music at home and understand the basics of music production. 



✩ 𝙋𝙇𝙀𝘼𝙎𝙀 𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀 ✩

♪ iPads or iPhones with GarageBand downloaded are ~ REQUIRED ~ for this course. You may NOT use a desktop or laptop computer. 

➡️ Please download the app ahead of time to ensure that your student is prepared for class (Requires iOS 13.0 or later!!!). Please let us know if you have problems at least 24 hours before class starts- refunds will NOT be given to students who realize they cannot access the app on Day 1 of class. ⬅️

♪ Students should have two devices- one for our Zoom call and one for GarageBand.

Please see below for an outline of our activities on each day of class. Please note that the content of each class may vary based on the skills and rate of understanding for each group of students. This is my plan, but of course it will change based on the students’ needs:

    ♪ Day 1: guided exploration of the app, exploring loops, trimming selections, adding sections and form, adding effects

    ♪ Day 2: performing, recording, and editing a drum beat, performing and recording guitar + bass guitar using a chord progression

    ♪ Day 3: performing and recording piano + strings using a chord progression, performing and recording a solo part, adding automation to tracks, exporting files

    ♪ Day 4: final touches, students share their favorite project to share with the class, extra time: using the audio recorder

Students do not need any prior knowledge of music theory, how to use the app, or how to play an instrument. The goal of this fun and engaging class is to introduce the ~absolute basics~ of GarageBand in a small group setting so that students can learn the controls and how to navigate the application. 

In the past, I have used these lessons and projects in my music classroom of 20+ students at a time, 2nd through 5th grade, and the response I received from my students was incredible. Students would visit my classroom each morning excited to share what they created at home on their own after our class. I could see their passion for music growing because of their ability to create music in ways they never thought possible. 

Music is becoming more and more digital every day. Music technology is going to continue to become more important to the music industry as time passes and I am so excited to share with these students how to make music in a new and exciting way! See you in the classroom! :)
