All students who complete the course will be sent a certificate of completion as well as award ribbons conferred for their placement in the in-class tournament. This class is for young learners who already have a significant formal chess background, likely including having taken multiple previous classes. We highly recommend that this class be taken after our "Advanced" course found here: https://outschool.com/classes/become-a-chess-pro-lessons-for-advanced-youths-2fcjv7ER?usid=wUq7nkLS&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link All learners are expected to already be comfortable with all of the rules of chess, as well as possess prerequisite knowledge and understanding of multiple Checkmate strategies and Opening strategies, such as those discussed in the Advanced course linked above, and our other lower-level courses. Throughout the semester we will build upon that knowledge with additional Opening strategies, mid-game strategies, and review historic games of famous chess Masters and Grandmasters, analyze the strategies employed, and learn how and when to replicate them, including some variations. Each week's lesson starts with about 30 minutes of explanation and discussion, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, virtual chess games between the classmates, supervised by the instructor. Schedule of Lessons (first 30 minutes of each class): Week 1: The Queen's Gambit (Accepted) Week 2: The Queen's Gambit (Declined) Week 3: The Slav Defense Week 4: The King's Indian Setup Week 5: Nimzo-Indian Week 6: London System/Colle System Week 7: Game Analysis: Bobby Fischer Immortal Game Week 8: Conclusion: Review, Chess Puzzles, and more! Schedule of Virtual Games (final 30 minutes of each class): Week 1: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 2: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 3: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 4: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 5: In-class tournament Round 1 games Week 6: In-class tournament Round 2 games Week 7: In-class tournament Round 3 games Week 8: Awards Ceremony (all students will be sent certificates of completion and tournament award ribbons)

Central New York Chess is a New York State registered Non Profit Organization, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
