In this class, we will explore the question, "How does play help us create?" We will think of new ideas for art-making through guessing games, improvisation techniques, surprising prompts, and by collaboratively inventing stories. Students have the choice of using modeling clay, drawing materials, and collage in response to a topic. I will show a slide that shows an artwork from art history as we play the game, “What is missing?” We will do games using story cubes (students don’t need to have a set, as mine is sufficient for the class) and description games that help students verbalize visual and spatial elements. Slides are the starting point for sketching, sculpting with modeling clay, and cutting and gluing pictures. We will use picture prompts, word prompts, and improvisation through collage. The purpose of the class is peer interaction and idea generation/creativity through play. If students are interested, there may be one video clip under 5-minutes that connects to our topic of creativity, followed by a short discussion. I will respond to some “how-to” requests and students can share what they are discovering as they use materials, but techniques and processes aren’t the focus of this class. Art Games and Stories is designed to generate laughter, sharing, and ideas - important parts of social-emotional learning.

Non-drying modeling clay: one color is fine, modeling clay is preferred over Model Magic because of its flexibility and because it can be reused, but you can use what is on hand. I like Crayola modeling clay or Plasticine. Drawing materials: several sheets of regular 8 ½” x 11” paper, pencil/eraser/sharpener and something to color with. An assortment of photos to cut out (you can print your own, use magazines, or print the attached pdf). one glue stick scissors

While working as the Lower School Art Teacher at a private school in Miami, I taught a year-long online curriculum exploring the essential question, “How do artists get ideas?” This reflects my interest in out-of-the-box thinking that transfers to domains outside of the art room. I believe that students need experiences that foster innovative thinking in order to develop the inclination to discover new things. In my work as an artist, I have collaborated with others in designing project ideas, used poetry and literature as inspiration for painting, and use feedback from others in my board game designs.
