Calling creative kids! This weekly model-building workshop introduces many aspects of making architecture in a fun, interesting and hands-on way. Open-ended projects allow learners to explore, invent and design their own unique creations. Each of the projects start with building or drawing techniques to learn, try and practice. Learners are given a design challenge with examples of how they might accomplish it. They are then free to interpret the project how they wish. Making architecture is a design process- it is never perfect or complete- but it can be a lot of fun and sometimes delightfully messy! This class guides learners through process-driven making with a new, open-ended project each week. The activities in this class help kids develop spatial perception- their ability to think and work in 3 dimensions- an important asset for studying architecture, geography and mathematics. My teaching style is very encouraging, and my goal is to build up my students' self esteem and confidence so that they keep trying, even when things get difficult. I will be there for support and guidance along the way, always cheering them on. PROJECTS: Week of 7/2: Card City - make a pop-up card with a city scene Week of 7/9: Paper Tower - Build a paper tower and design your architecture to include windows, balcony, and stairs. Week of 7/16: Fractal Forest - Learn how to make paper trees and design a forest scene. Week of 7/23: Frame House - Create a 3-dimensional framed house using a kit of parts that you make yourself out of straws and pipecleaners. Week of 7/30: Earth Building- Use a clay, sticks, and string to build an eco-building Week of 8/6: Labyrinth- design and build a maze or labyrinth Week of 8/13: City Skyline - design, color, cut and fold a skyline of skyscrapers Week of 8/20: Tesselation Tiles - learn about patterns in architecture and make your own stencil to create a tessellated pattern.
