In this four-week multi-class session, we will meet three times per week and cover Module One of the Savannah Math Labs Statistics content. This module encompasses Unit 1 of the A.P. Statistics curriculum (approximately 20% of the A.P. Statistics exam). Students enrolling in this session should have a solid grasp and understanding of Algebra. Students will receive the 25-page Module 1 Savannah Math Labs text document in addition to approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes of animated videos and Microsoft® Excel® tutorials. For weeks 1-3, we will adhere to the following schedule: • First meeting: Review the course content and topics for the week (Students should prepare by reading the relevant text and watching the relevant videos). • Second meeting: Work as a group on an in-class exercise. • Third meeting: Solve 3 - 4 AP Statistics problems related to the week’s content. An immersive-learning Microsoft® Excel® lab project is provided to students and solutions will be reviewed in Week 4. In the fourth week, we will also discuss student questions and review additional A.P. Statistics problems. The following topics will be covered during each week of this four-week session: Week 1: Introduction to Statistics, Examples of Descriptive Statistics Versus Inferential Statistics. Categorical Versus Quantitative Data, Simple Random Samples, Definition of Statistical Bias, Types of Statistical Bias: Selection Bias, Response Bias. Week 2: Numerical Summaries for Quantitative Data, Graphical Methods for Quantitative Data, Changing Units of Measurement, Cumulative Relative Frequency Week 3: Box Plots, Normally Distributed Data, Z-Scores and Outliers. Week 4: Wrap-Up Lab Module 1, Review Lab Module 1 Assignment, Additional Practice AP Module 1 questions. Following this Module 1 session, a 2-week session covering Probability (Module 2) will be available starting in late September which covers The Classical Method of Computing Probabilities, The Law of Large Numbers and The Combinations Rule. Subsequent modules will cover the AP Statistics course content in its entirety to prepare students for the May 2024 A.P. Statistics exam!
学習到達目標
Learning objectives for Module 1 are as follows:
1. Differentiate between categorical and quantitative data sets.
2. Graphically depict a categorical data set with a pie graph, bar graph and Pareto graph.
3. Explain the additional value a Pareto graph provides over a traditional bar graph.
4. Characterize a quantitative data set with key summary statistics.
5. Change the measurement units of a quantitative variable (x) based on a linear transformation (y = ax +b) and compute the new sample mean and sample variance of y.
6. Visualize the distribution of a quantitative data set with a histogram, dot plot, stem and leaf plot, cumulative relative frequency graph and a box plot.
7. Compute a Z-score distribution and assess whether data is consistent with the empirical rule for normally distributed data.
