During this one-time class, students will learn how to study Aesop's fables. We will discuss what a fable is, read fables together, and answer wh- questions (who, what, where) to check for understanding. Then we will examine the fable's lesson and re-write it in our own words. Finally, we will write our own ending to a fable with a relevant lesson. As the teacher, I will guide the students to make "smart guesses'' about the fable using context clues and vocabulary clues. No prior experience...
Students will leave class with a deeper knowledge of Aesop's fables, practice with reading comprehension and inferencing, and analysis of how the lessons can be applied to their lives.
I have taught reading comprehension and inference skills to students in public elementary and middle schools for 4 years as a certified speech-language pathologist. I have used fables to determine a student's baseline skills as well as to measure progress throughout the year.
