In this 1 time 80 minute class, we will use Seminar (Socratic Method) to discuss, examine, and analysis the history of the major battle of the Civil War (from Fort Sumter 1861 to the Appomattox Court House 1865). Beyond the history of the famous Civil War Battles we will end the class ranking the crazy facial hair of the leaders from the Civil War. This historical irony is not discussed in many classes, but there is some wild and crazy facial hair from this period. The Civil War was also one of the first major wars to be photographed, which allows us historians and students of history taking this course to rank the crazy facial hair.

All fun and jokes aside, the Civil War class will examine the history of the major battles from the bombardment of Fort Sumter (1861) to the final surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House (1865). The class will use primary documents (photographs, pictures, maps, and battle ground tours) with a history presentation (which all students will get at the end of the class) to discuss through the seminar method the strategies of each side during major battles. The seminar discussion in our class will examine who had the better ground, some military philosophy for the time period, military technologies of both sides, and the what if's of history in analyzing which side won certain battles. The class will finish in the last ten minutes with a review activity that helps memorize who won certain battles as well as rank the different leaders facial war through a creative and fun ranking system (polling within our Zoom).

Civil War Battles:
Fort Sumter-1861
Battle of Bull Run/First Battle of Manassas-1861
Battle of Shiloh-1862
Battle of Seven Pines-1862
Battle of Second Bull Run/Second Battle of Manassas-1862
