In this fun and interactive class we will create a work of art using food while learning a few interesting facts about zebras. At the end of the class, students will get to use their creativity to create a snack cake OR banana zebra. Fun and yummy! This is the fifth Food Art classes I've offered on Outschool! The others; Oceans and Fish, All About Eagles, All About Penguins, and Cerealscapes (Math Art) are all fun interactive, interesting, and yummy classes as well! Students bring their...
Students will be able to recount 2 things they've learned about zebras. Students will have the opportunity to use their creativity to explore using food as art.
One of my goals is to keep my students engaged during the entire lesson. This is one way to do it. We learn and share about zebras in the beginning of the class and then get busy with our food art and, of course, eating our creation upon completion! I've taught this class as part of science curriculum, art, and after-school activities. It's always been a hit!
For Snack Cake Zebra: 1 Little Debbie Zebra Snack Cake (or something similar) 1 Tootsie Roll/orange slices/orange gumdrops (or dried fruit) for mouth area 2 small marshmallows/mints (or whatever you choose) for the ears 2 edible eyes * Ingredients may be substituted as long as the replacement items will stick to the snack cake. Beware! The snack cakes are very delicate and may fall apart if handled roughly :) I also found that using a tiny bit of frosting will help the zebra parts stick better to the snack cake . ** Alternative (Somewhat) Healthier Version: 1 small banana Chocolate frosting (small amount for zebra stripes) (Toothpick or fork to spread the frosting.) 2 edible eyes 1 Tootsie Roll/orange slices/orange gumdrops (or dried fruit) for face area 2 almonds or candy (or other edible small food for ears)
There is a supply list mentioned below that parents should have gathered prior to the start of class. This is an easy to prepare (purchasing simple supplies) and easy to follow class. Students should not have food next to them during the lesson part of the class. We want to have some left for when we create! :) The art project will take place at the end of the lesson.
Hello and Welcome! I grew up knowing I would be a teacher. My journey took me from college to owning my own performing arts school to founding a small, private school in my hometown neighborhood to now operating a nonprofit organization that I...
