This class will examine the rich history of African Kingdoms and Empires in West, East, South, and Central Africa. Africa had thriving Empires before colonization as far back as 3000 BCE that traded with each other. Communities and societies were organized with well-defined professions, education systems, and judicial systems and cultures They learned how to smelt iron to make agricultural tools which increased food production and weapons for protection. They also migrated long distances taking technologies with them wherever they settled. The Kingdoms and Empires traveled and traded with other dynasties as far as China, India, Borneo, Greco-Roman empires, and others. Topics will include, - Geographical Location of each Empire. - Timeline. - Tribes and Communities. - The rise of an Empire. - Rulers and Leaders. - Judicial Systems - Societal organization. - Customs and Culture. - Trade within Africa and Beyond. - Travel around Africa and Beyond. - Religion and Education. - Reasons for the Fall of the Empires. Week 1: Ancient Egypt. Week 2: Carthage. Week 3: Kush Kingdom. Week 4: The Kingdom of Aksum. Week 5: Ghana Empire. Week 6: Mali Empire. Week 7: Songhai Empire and Kanem Bornu Empire Week 8: Swahili States. Week 9: The Great Zimbabwe Kingdom. Week 10: The Great Kongo Empire
