Words have power, and the person who learns to use them effectively can influence the world. This course focuses on developing language mechanics and writing skills. It is an ongoing class that will meet once per week. Learners will develop their grammar proficiency and writing skills and grow their passion for writing in a supportive environment. The curriculum will include lessons on language mechanics, skill drills, gamification, and writing exercises. Learners will have time to write, collaborate with classmates, and share their writing in class. We will use writing prompts to write stories, poems, songs – whatever creative minds can dream. The teacher will offer guidance and feedback to help learners improve their grammar, spelling, and writing skills. We will build a supportive community that nurtures confidence to share work and give respectful, helpful feedback. Classes will follow the following format: a warm-up exercise to stimulate creativity a collaboration activity to build community a game to enhance grammar skills time to write time to share Each class will have a different theme that writers can develop into a story, a poem, a song, a rap, etc. A wide range of opportunities for creative expression will help the writer enjoy producing work without focusing on perfection. I will include language skill-building exercises throughout the course, but this will be done in a fun, supportive way through games and activities. Week 1 (January 10): All About Me: We will write a short story about ourselves to share with the class. Week 2 (January 17): Fantasy: Create your world from your words. Week 3 (January 24): Fairy Tale: Bring your imagination to life with characters and dialogue. Week 4: January 31: Science Fiction: What technology do you envision for the future? Week 5: February 7: Real Life: Did something wild, funny, or weird happen to you? Please share it. Week 6: February 14: Funny: Use characters, situations, and life to create jokes and funny stories. We will expand the topic lists from student-generated ideas. But don’t worry; I have a ready supply of ideas for future lessons.

I am an author with books published in both fiction and non-fiction genres. I am also a professional artist. I consider words to be as much of an artistic tool as paint and brushes.
As a child, I loved to write stories and poems; I even enjoyed the writing assignments in school. I studied psychology and biology in college. But I loved English so much that I took literature and creative writing classes for fun. I ended up with a degree in psychology with a concentration in English and biology. (Facepalm: I later discovered that I was just three credits shy of earning a degree in English, too.)
I have a profound love and respect for the power and potential of words. I am excited to help your learner release their creative energy and use their words to change the world around them.
