What Will Be Taught? This 8-week English Language Arts course will help 2nd grade students develop essential reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills aligned with California Common Core Standards. Students will improve their fluency in reading, strengthen their comprehension skills in both fiction and nonfiction, expand their vocabulary, and express their ideas clearly through different forms of writing. Topics Covered Each week will focus on a specific area of English Language Arts, including: Phonics, decoding, and fluency practice Reading comprehension (fiction and nonfiction) Story elements (characters, setting, and plot) Vocabulary development using context clues Writing personal narratives, opinions, and informational pieces Speaking and listening skills Grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation Class Structure The class will meet twice a week with the following structure: Day 1: Introduction to the weekly topic, direct instruction, and guided practice activities Day 2: Hands-on activities, group discussions, writing exercises, and review of key concepts This format allows students to build on each lesson, providing them with opportunities to practice what they’ve learned and apply new skills. How Will the Class Be Taught? The class will utilize a variety of teaching methods to engage students and help them retain what they learn: Live instruction to explain and model new concepts Guided practice in reading, writing, and speaking to reinforce learning Interactive discussions where students share thoughts and ask questions Games and hands-on activities to make learning fun and engaging Visual aids like slides and charts to support learning and comprehension Storytime and read-alouds to develop listening skills and stimulate imagination Teaching Style I emphasize a fun, supportive, and interactive teaching approach. My style is focused on engaging students in learning through hands-on activities, creative writing, and opportunities for self-expression. I strive to make lessons lively and enjoyable, with a mix of structured guidance and open-ended exploration. Learner Interaction Students will have several opportunities to engage with me and their peers: Live discussions where students can ask questions and share their ideas Collaborative group work on reading and writing activities Interactive games to reinforce vocabulary, grammar, and story comprehension Writing prompts and feedback to help students improve their writing skills This class is designed to foster confidence in reading and writing while providing students with the tools they need to succeed in English Language Arts. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in key language arts skills that they can continue to build on in the future.

I am an experienced educator and writer with over 25 years in marketing, curriculum development, and teaching. I hold a Master’s degree in Strategic Communications and have extensive experience in curriculum design and instructional development for both in-person and online learning environments.
I have worked in K-12 education as a curriculum developer, creating engaging lesson plans that align with educational standards. Additionally, I have designed and taught courses focusing on literacy, writing, and communication skills.
Beyond formal education, I have homeschooled my children from kindergarten through 5th grade, allowing me to develop a deep understanding of early literacy development, individualized instruction, and creating engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences. My approach emphasizes interactive learning, storytelling, and hands-on activities to make reading and writing enjoyable for young learners.
