This class will cover American History from Expansion with the Mexican-American War to the beginning of US involvement in World War 2. In week 1, we will look at the Mexican-American War. We will look at why it happened and how it caused the US to expand and add more territory. We will also look at how it deepened the sectional divide that would lead the country to Civil War. In week 2, we will examine the abolition movement- what it was, key players, key opposition, and beliefs and actions behind the movement. The subject of slavery may be troubling for some, but we will examine it and the divide that it caused in our country and talk about why people fought to abolish it. In weeks 3 and 4, we will discuss the Civil War. We will look at the causes of it, key battles, key players and the outcomes. How did a "house divided" reconcile to become a "more perfect union "? In week 5, we will look at the Gilded Age. How did this glitzy age of reconstruction and prosperity have an ugly side? We will look at the political scandals, social movements, and key figures and groups. In week 6, we will look at the age of immigration. We will look at the people who came to the United States for a better life. Please note, this will not be a discussion of current immigration policies, nor will we be engaged in one. In week 7, we will look at the age of the airplane. What inventions of this time era sought to better the lives of its citizens? How did they change the world? In week 8, we will look at World War I- How did it start and how did the neutral US ended up involved? In week 9, we will look at the prosperity and social movements of the Roaring Twenties. In week 10, we will look at the Great Depression and what it meant for Americans and for people all over the world. In week 11, we will look at the New Deal and how our political landscape was forever changed In week 12, we will look at how the US became involved in World War 2. How did a "day that will live in infamy" cause America to be engaged in its biggest war to that date?

Those in history affected by the abomination of slavery will be treated with the utmost respect. I never refer to "slaves". I used the term "enslaved people" because they were people above all and slavery was something that happened to them.
When we discuss immigration, we will be looking at it from a historical perspective. We will NOT be engaging in a debate on current policy.
We are also discussing 4 wars- Mexican American War, the Civil War and World Wars 1 and 2.

I am a teacher of social studies. I have taught American History for 6 years. I have also learned from Teaching Tolerance and Carolina K12 at UNC how to teach "hard history"; this includes teaching history of marginalized historical groups. I also had a Carolina K12/University of NC fellowship in oral history concerning Civil Rights. I have worked with marginalized people groups as well.
