Group experience

Welcome to our American Girl group!!!

This is a fun space where I will post ideas, crafts, photos, recipes, videos... everything and all things American Girl! Here, I will add in weekly posts about something American Girl related (a craft, a video, a video, etc), and the group members can interact, share their own ideas, and even share photos of their learning/crafts. How about a historical character-themed charcuterie board or holiday shopping like Samantha?! How about Maryellen fashion in our everyday lives or a Miss Victory hairstyle that we can wear to school? I have so many fun ideas to share! This group is designed to be a fun space where friends can gather to share ideas and photos of all things American Girl with others that are just as big of fans as they are!

As the group moderator, I will be hosting regular large posts on a weekly basis. As the group members respond, I will be interacting on a regular basis and including myself in the conversations (and to monitor conversations). Each week, we will have one main post (from me) and then the group members can respond with their thoughts and comments. Each post will give a suggestion for something "to do" (ie - make themed cookies, create a holiday decoration, or make a craft). The group members can then upload photos or explain what they've done during the week as they finish. I will also be commenting and posting on their posts in the feed as they share.

**This group is geared more towards a 10-15-year-old age group so many of my ideas, posts, and activities to share will be geared more towards this age group. I view this group to be a group of AG fans that have a ton of love for American Girl and want to keep American Girl in their lives but don't necessarily play with dolls on a daily basis.**

Check out my example of a post! :)

Hey all!!!

It's getting chilly outside now that Halloween is over and Thanksgiving is on the rise. That has me thinking of delicious treats and ideas for Thanksgiving. Even though we might be kids, we can still add to the Thanksgiving tablescape! I have TWO ideas for you this week!

1. Think about hosting a Thanksgiving for your dolls! If you're having people over, make sure to tell everyone to bring their doll and/or a friend. You can make plates, napkins, and even use modeling clay to create some AG doll food! Use a box for the table and use a piece of fabric for the tablecloth.

2. Think about a way to incorporate your AG love into your Thanksgiving holiday! One way is to add an AG-themed side or dessert to the meal. Think of delicious food that is mentioned in one of the AG books - maybe apple butter or even MASHED TURNIPS if you're brave enough!!! Make sure to ask an adult for help and assistance. Making a fun dish with an adult is such a fun memory!

I'll be working on molding some foods with my modeling clay this week for my doll's Thanksgiving table. I'm also going to plan some kind of a dish for our Thanksgiving celebration that comes from one of the AG books. I am thinking I am going to make Felicity's apple butter to snack on as an appetizer along with some crackers and biscuits. That will be so yummy and I will love thinking of my Felicity doll during Thanksgiving!

What can you think of that you would like to do this week?! Post below and share! Can't wait to chat with you this week! As soon as I finish my projects, I will post some photos! I can't wait to see what you think!

Parental Guidance
Although we will not be reading any American Girl books, I always suggest reading the American Girl books. Please be advised that the Kirsten book series does present some culturally insensitive topics and terminology. As a trained anthropologist, I will (and always teach my students to) use correct terminology and culturally sensitive terms to be respectful to the particular people of study - even if that term is not what is used in the textbook/book. As a licensed history teacher, I also have many PD hours dedicated to cultural sensitivity and correct teachings when it comes to historical events that present cultural insensitivities. In all situations for each of the characters of weekly interactions throughout the group messages, projects, posts, and topics, I will present all perspectives of all parties involved in the historical event that the character lives through. It is important to understand historical events from all lenses and perspectives in order to build empathy and understanding of all parties involved. Even though this group is not a history class, some historical facts and concepts may arise. Some of the American Girl characters have stories that portray false or harmful historical narratives. As a current history teacher on Outschool and in a brick-and-mortar school, I have experience in handling potentially sensitive and/or inaccurate topics and clarifying these in an age-appropriate manner. Historical facts will be presented accurately, in a manner that includes marginalized groups and Indigenous perspectives. All posts from myself and from all group members MUST reflect these standards. Posts that do not will be removed by the educator.

Hi there! My name is Mrs. Rodenbeck and I am a middle school history teacher! I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th, grade history for the past 7 years! Before that, I taught high school history. I absolutely LOVE learning about people from the past! I like understanding how people lived in different times in history.

I studied anthropology in college. My goal as a kid was to be Indiana Jones! Archaeology and cultural anthropology are my favorite disciplines. I like to learn about what past peoples have built and how those things impact their culture. I’ve even done work for Chicago’s Field Museum since 2007. Now I work in the education department at the Field Museum with other teachers and bringing history topics into their classrooms.

I love teaching about the American Girl books and their periods of time in history because I used to WORK at the American Girl store in Chicago. I worked there all throughout my college years. I loved American Girl when I was a kid and I loved it, even more, when I worked at the store in college!

I hope that from my courses, you can take some of my passion for history and for American Girl and get a little more excited about learning about other people. There are so many fun and exciting things to learn about! I can’t wait to share them with you!
