During this class we will work on creating our own comic strips or a comic book. Every week, we will look at different elements of creating comic books and work through the writing process surrounding comics by brainstorming, planning, editing, revising, and publishing. Each week we will have a different focus like learning how to set up your story panel, include key details in your drawing, different types of speech & thought bubbles, sound effects, short text captions, and will share our work with one another. Students will learn how to create their own comics utilizing the writing process and a new specific skill that focuses on comics specifically like learning how to set up your story panel, include key details in your drawing, different types of speech & thought bubbles, sound effects, short text captions, etc.

Students will be creating their own artwork and different families have different opinions on violence or scariness within their households. If a student is sharing work that seems to graphic the teacher will ask them to send it privately for feedback instead of sharing with the class.

Students will need a pencil, paper, ruler, and something colorful like crayons, colored pencils, or markers. They may also use the prints provided by the teacher.

I have been teaching writing classes on Outschool for almost 4 years that includes a favorite unit on comic writing. Also, I have taught comic units in-person in classroom, non-profit activity, and therapeutic settings as a part of my work as a teacher, tutor, and therapist. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in education and am finishing a clinical psychology degree where I have worked with young clients to use writing and comics to express themselves as a coping mechanism.
