What? Yes, I can picture it! - developing concept imagery for reading comprehension and written expression.

Who? For readers who are proficient in decoding and fluency but still struggling with comprehension of fiction, non-fiction, and functional texts (ie: word problems, directions, sequencing). (Dyslexia, ASD, ADHD, Learning Disability, Language Processing disorder, Auditory Processing disorder)

Grades 3-5, Small group sections (2-6 students), 2 x weekly for 6 weeks (12 sessions)

Small groups are offered as six-week sections. (Three sections include Beginning - this coure, Intermediate - higher order thinking and complex paragraphs, Advanced - imagining your writing and transfer skills to other reding content). Each course section

How does it work? Concept Imagery for reading and writing works by building a solid framework by using a set of descriptive words* to help the student tell about the details of a visual or text. The student is prompted by the teacher to create an image in their head from what is read and use the descriptive words to describe it. This process helps aid in the comprehension of text. (Later, this process can support writing skills as well.)

Section one is an introduction to concept imagery and the use of descriptive words.

Vivianne, a special education teacher and ADHD coach for kids was trained in a LindamoodBell learning center in California. Since then, she has incorporated their concept imagery process in her classroom and private tutoring when working with students who are having difficulty with their expressive language of reading comprehension and in idea generation for writing.

For older students, this technique is helpful to use with math problem-solving and comprehension during response to reading exams.

Published on LindamoodBell website:
Clinical research and experience over the last thirty years indicate there is a separate comprehension weakness that is rarely identified. This weakness often undermines the reading process…It is weakness, based in the sensory system, in creating an imaged gestalt.

A primary cause of language comprehension problems is difficulty creating an imagined gestalt. This is called weak concept imagery. This weakness causes individuals to get only “parts” of information they read or hear, but not the whole.

Individuals of all ages may experience the symptoms of a weakness in concept imagery.
This causes weakness in:
Reading comprehension
Listening comprehension
Critical thinking and problem-solving
Following directions
Memory
Oral language expression
Written language expression
Grasping humor
Interpreting social situations
Understanding cause and effect

* Descriptive words: where, who, how many, background, perspective, color, size, sound, motion, shape, mood, when
