Are you looking for a class to help your child learn poetry? Perhaps you would like them to work on writing skills? Poetry is a wonderful way for your child to explore this unique style of writing and utilize different writing skills than traditional fiction story writing. This class is designed to teach four different poetry forms over the course of four weeks while at the same time providing your child lots of writing practice! In this interactive class, your child will be introduced to one form of poetry each week. The poetry forms taught during this class are: haiku, cinquain, diamante, and acrostic. The class has been set up as an ongoing class so you can come for all 4 sessions or pick and choose the ones your child is interested in attending. With every poetry form, we'll have opportunities to hear/read poems, discuss the form's characteristics, and respond and share about each poem presented. Then we'll have fun writing our own poems to correlate with the taught poetry form. This is a great way for your child to learn not only about the poetry forms, but also engage him/her with writing. Your child will have plenty of opportunities to write and interact with others as they create their own poem, modelled after the weekly poem form. Poetry allows students to break away from the traditional structure of sentence writing and can be the perfect hook for reluctant writers! I love to capture students' creativity through writing and poems allows for a simple yet fun way to write! My class is high energy and engaging to provide students plenty of interaction with others. Depending on the size of the class and the weekly format, we will utilize breakout rooms to give students a chance to have 1:1 with writing instruction as well as peer sharing! Students will have time during our class to share their own poem reflecting the form of the week, should they choose to share. Additionally, if you would like your child to practice and continue their writing after our weekly class, I always provide a class challenge. This "challenge" is meant to encourage your child to write a poem reflecting the week's poetry form. It is an optional activity but can be used however you see fit in your home/learning environment. If completed, your child can send in the weekly challenge to receive comments/feedback from me. I am always happy to provide feedback for your child and help them feel successful with their writing! A great way to connect home and "school" learning! So come have fun with poetry! Schedule: Week 1: Haiku Week 2: Cinquain Week 3: Diamante Week 4: Acrostic Please note: I do have a one time class that focuses only on haikus if that is of interested to your child! It can be found here: https://outschool.com/classes/poetry-fun-blending-together-haikus-and-writing-skills-0WK9WQB2#usfLya0wn1 Additionally, if you are interested in learning more about the structure of ongoing classes, please visit: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/2272596-ongoing-classes-for-learners Finally, if you the listed class doesn't work for you, be sure to send a request stating what day/times you are looking for and I'll do my best to meet your needs. Do you have a group of learners that would like their own private class? Let me know that and I can set this class up as a private (rather than public) class and it will have your set group of learners! Great for friends, neighbors, or even a home learning co-op. Any questions, please send me a message!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am excited to offer this course as I have been teaching poetry in my classroom and library for over 15 years. My Master's in Reading and National Board certification has strengthened my teaching abilities and this is a topic which I love sharing with students. Often poetry is negatively viewed by students, but I work to make it fun, exciting, and interactive. My hope is students walk away with a newfound appreciation and love for poetry! Anyone can be a poet!
