Esta clase de escritura creativa aprovecha el poder de la actuación y el dibujo para que los estudiantes se involucren y se llenen de energía para escribir sus propias narraciones y diálogos y compartir sus historias de aventuras originales en un entorno de apoyo y divertido.

Welcome, adventurous writers!
My name is Meredith. I am a writer, an actor, a director and your teacher for this class. I look forward to helping you create, share and act out adventure stories using a different theme as a starting point each week.

Here's how it works:

*We start with a friendly greeting for each learner and a quick warm-up for our imaginations, voices and bodies.
*Meredith shares a prompt. This may take the form of a picture, a sound, a few words or a sentence. For example: "What so we see from the top of the mountain?" or a voice calling out "Ahoy there!" or a picture of a robot and some tools.
*Discussion of preliminary ideas inspired by the prompt. A little acting based on the ideas and characters that are suggested.
*Meredith writes some of the ideas and some vocabulary words to choose from on the "white board" on her shared screen, and writes an example of a short paragraph or snippet of dialogue based on learners' ideas.
*We get to work! Learners decide whether they want to start writing immediately or begin by sketching a character.
*As everyone works independently on their adventure story (through writing and/or drawing) Meredith engages with each learner to find out what kind of guidance they may need. Some class members may want to narrate a first sentence to be written on the white board for them to copy. Others may want help with the spelling of a word, or want to talk through their idea if they are stuck. This part of our class time is geared to each individual, their level of experience and comfort with writing, and their needs that particular day.
*Sharing and acting out a moment of each narrative or dialogue that is shared. Sharing is optional but highly encouraged!
*Closure: thanking everyone for their work and support of other learners.

The hope is that learners will be inspired to continue to work on their adventure stories on their own during the week. Learners are very welcome to send their work to me as a message or to post it on the classroom page. I will always respond with supportive feedback and questions or suggestions for further engagement!

Learners can take this class as many times as they wish, and it is fine to take weeks off as needed and desired. Each class has a new theme and prompt, so learners can create new stories each time or stick with the same characters and use each week's session as the basis for a new chapter in an ongoing adventure.

Thanks so much, and please feel free to message me through Outschool with any questions.

Hello! My name is Meredith. My favorite thing to do is CREATE in community, and that includes collaborating with my community of learners here on Outschool. I love providing students with tools to communicate effectively and tell stories through writing, acting, movement, improvisation, drawing and design. I feel inspired as I watch their skills grow during our work together. I enjoy using my imagination and 30 years of teaching experience to plan each new class and customize the curriculum to match my students' interests and learning goals. Working in partnership with families and students is important to me, because as a parent I know how much it means to have a teacher take the time to really get to know my child and help them get the most out of an educational experience.

I am currently teaching 1:1 sessions on Tuesdays only, and limited group classes.

When I'm not teaching you can find me acting, directing, dancing or writing plays and books.
Some of my favorite acting roles include a monster, a fairy, a movie star and a queen.
I also like to play with my cat, draw, dance and take long walks by the lake near my home in Seattle, Washington, USA.

I grew up in New York City and received my BA at Yale College. I have performed and taught in many towns and cities in the United States. Some of my most inspiring experiences have been my years with Living Stage in Washington, DC and at Seattle Children's Theatre. I have also written a chapter book: "The Ghostlight Kids Get Hooked," an adventure that takes place backstage in a theater.

I would say the skill that most defines me as a teacher is listening carefully to what each student has to offer and weaving that into the direction a class is taking, whether that means centering a story on students' suggestions or recalibrating a lesson plan on the spot. My oldest child (now an adult) is neurodivergent, and I find that my experiences with my child and other ND students has made me a good partner for learners with a wide range of learning styles.

In addition to teaching creative drama, acting and Improv I have taught Math, Language Arts, Health Ed concepts and Science concepts to small groups of learners. I have training in trauma informed practices as well as techniques for teaching Social Emotional Learning through the Arts. I have experience leading friendship groups and community service projects.

I have been teaching for over 30 years and every day is a new, exciting adventure. I learn as much as I teach!
