In this multi-day writing camp, students will build on their writing skills beginning with learning to label drawings and move into more of creating sentences. I keep the class small so that I am able to provide some one-on-one time with each student throughout the course as they work independently at times. We will also use sight words from the kindergarten sight word list- Fry's first 100 sight words in our sentences. This class is a great way for students to connect reading skills to writing skills. This class is geared towards students who know how to write letters and knows most if not all of their letter sounds. Each day, we will begin the class by learning/reviewing sight words we will use for that day. I believe in the instruction method, "I do, We do, You do" and will incorporate that into my teaching. Each day of camp, I will model our skill of the day (I do). Then, we will work together on practicing the skill (We do). The "You do" part takes place in the class and at home when students continue practicing the skills learned in class. I will also teach students about capitalization for names and first words in sentences as well as and using punctuation in our sentences. We will work together to build on skills until students write at least one to two sentences. In the beginning, students may just need to copy until they feel more comfortable creating and writing their own sentences. This class is not about spelling as misspelled words are expected. At times, words will need to be sounded out whether it is CVC (i.e. cat, dog) or that will be phonetically spelled (i.e. student spells lyn for lion). That is great for early writers! The point is they are using correct sounds to spell. Students should have prior knowledge and ability to write letters and know sounds of many letters to take the course. I have a course for teaching letters and letter formation if your child needs to start there first. I also have a sight words class if you want your child to build sight word identification and writing knowledge first. These courses can even be taken together to enhance their early reading and writing skills. Through this course, students can build confidence as writers while working together as a class in creating and writing sentences. This class is NOT for writing paragraphs although I encourage students to write as much as they would like to in my class. This is a class geared towards early writing that is taught in kindergarten and first grade. I created this course to help students grow in confidence as they work towards building the writing foundation needed to help them be successful writers! I strive to teach based on the student’s level. However, because this is a camp, the skills taught will be more compact than in my ongoing course. We will begin with labeling (i.e. cat) and continue to creating a sentence(s)- (I see a cat.) I may provide a handout we will be using in class or to work on at home for independent practice. These will be provided through the classroom tab before class each week. If handouts are provided for practice at home or a writing assignment is given, I would love for the students to post their work in the classroom. I encourage students to shine in our classroom by taking pride in their growth in learning! I am a patient and encouraging teacher and will always work hard to make students feel comfortable in their learning. I am available and will check the classroom and parent private messages daily for any questions and help you may need. I will provide feedback to let you know how your student is doing in their progress as a writer. I often call them "glows and grows" meaning I will always tell you something your child is doing well at and if there is something he or she can work on in regard to strategies we are practicing in class. As an educator, my purpose is to help your child be successful, and I am here for you in helping them at home as well. Always feel free to message me with any questions or concerns. So, join me on this early writer's journey to building confidence and skills as a writer! Skills taught in class: **Please note, the pace of the class will depend on the students. *While the goal is to write 2-4 sentences, I strive to make students feel comfortable and confident as early writers. Some students may get farther in their writing than others, and some may just complete 1-2 sentences. Some students may do a new picture and writing piece each day. Everyone works at a different pace, and that’s okay! Students will be encouraged and praised for their effort and hard work!

Lista de útiles escolares
It is best for students use lined paper often used in kindergarten (lined handwriting tablet). This paper helps students to follow the formation of letters as uppercase and lowercase as well as large enough to use spacing between words correctly. The tablets with lines and picture box at the top is even better so that students can draw to match their sentence. One or both is up to you. Pencil, eraser Some weeks, I may provide a handout that can be completed in class or at home to provide further practice. Any handouts I provide can be found in the classroom tab.
