A strong sentence is needed to tell intriguing stories. And in the real world, writing a simple sentence is how many people communicate. Thus, it’s important that students have a good understanding of writing sentences, so they can express their ideas in the classroom, on social media, and in email communications.

We will review the four basic types of sentences (exclamatory, interrogative, statement, imperative ) and four basic structures (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex). This class serves as reinforcement and practice of these sentences.

** Students should be able to make simple sentences independently -- no help from a parent -- to fully participate in the class.

Class Format:
1. Warm-up (game/photo/sentence)
2. Review of Specific Sentence (complex, exclamatory, etc.)
3. Introduce "I Spy" image and theme
4. Teacher’s sentence example
5. Class creates a sentence while playing "I Spy"
6. Individual student create a sentence for classmates to guess image
7. Homework Assignment (post sentences on class site)

I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.

Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.

I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.

On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
