In this online class, students will learn how to write a multiparagraph essay. They will brainstorm, plan, write, revise, and edit in this course. Students will be given step-by-step instructions on how to write a multiparagraph paper on a topic of their choice. ****** COURSE OVERVIEW ***** This course meets once a week for ten weeks. In this course students will learn each step in the process of writing a multiparagraph paper. Students will ... - Brainstorm - Choose a writing topic - Create a thesis statement - Plan out each paragraph - Write topic sentences - Use transition words - Write a five-paragraph paper - Revise their writing - Edit their writing - Write a final draft - Create a booklet ***** PREREQUISITE ***** Students must be able to write a paragraph independently before enrolling in this course. This class is a good fit for students who .... - Are ready to write multiple paragraphs - Are new to writing multiple paragraphs in a paper - Need guidance in writing a multiparagraph paper - Need a review on how to write a multiparagraph paper This class is not a good fit for students who .... - Need guidance in writing sentences - Struggle to brainstorm or write independently - Cannot write a paragraph ***** WEEKLY TOPICS ***** Week 1 - Choose your topic Week 2 - Plan out your topic Week 3 - Thesis statement and introductory paragraph Week 4 - Make an outline for each body paragraph Week 5 - Write a topic sentence for each body paragraph and write the conclusion Week 6 - Write the first draft Week 7 - Revise the first draft Week 8 - Edit the first draft Week 9 - Write the final draft Week 10 - Create a booklet ***** WEEKLY BREAKDOWN ***** ** Week 1 - Choose Your Topic ** Students will brainstorm and decide on a topic for their paper. They will start with a group brainstorming session. The group will brainstorm: - Hobbies - Events/Holidays - Places - People/animals Students will create an Expert Map on four topics they are an expert in. They will add information they know, draw pictures, etc. on their map. Students will choose the topic for their paper. ** Week 2 - Plan Out Your Topic ** Students will plan out their topic for each paragraph. They will begin by doing a brain dump on their topic. They will list everything they know about their topic. Students will group ideas that go together. Students will block out their paragraphs. They will determine what each paragraph will be about. ** Week 3 - Thesis Statement and Introductory Paragraph ** Students will learn how to make a thesis statement for their entire paper. The thesis statement is the heart of the paper. Students will write a thesis statement for their paper. They will also learn how to write their introductory paragraph. It will contain the plan for the paper. ** Week 4 - Make an Outline for Each Body Paragraph ** Students will plan out each body paragraph. They will learn how to create an outline for each body paragraph. The outline will include: - Topic - Key ideas - Details - Transition Words ** Week 5 - Topic Sentences and Conclusion ** Students will write a topic sentence for each body paragraph. They will learn how to make their topic sentences transitional, so the paper easily flows from one paragraph to the next. Students will also write a conclusion for their paper. Their conclusion will include: - Conclusion words - Summary of the key ideas - Description on why the topic is important ** Week 6 - Write the First Draft ** Students will use their outline to write a first draft. They will turn their ideas into complete sentences. I will model how to write the first draft, and then, students will use their own outline to write their own first draft. ** Week 7 - Revise the First Draft ** Students will learn about adding background and additional information to their draft. They will learn that this adds more information to their writing. Students will revise their writing to add more details. ** Week 8 - Edit the Draft ** Students will edit their writing using the CUPS method. C = Capitalization U = Understanding P = Punctuation S = Spelling ** Week 9 - Write the Final Draft ** Students will take their revised and edited paper. They will write a final draft using the revisions and edits in this draft. Students will use their best handwriting to write the final draft. ** Week 10 - Create a Booklet ** Students will create a booklet. They will write the paragraph throughout the booklet and add pictures to their booklet. The booklet pages will include: - Title Page - 5 pages (one page for each paragraph) - About the Author Page Students will share their booklets at the end of the class time. ************************************************************************** ****** SHARE YOUR WRITING ****** As students are completing different parts of the writing, I do encourage students to share a picture of their writing material with me. This allows me to see how their writing is coming along and what we may need to review. ************************************************************************** ****** MATERIALS ***** I will post the handouts at the beginning of each week. You need to keep the handouts throughout the duration of the course. We will reference back to different handouts. ****** AFTER CLASS ****** I will provide anchor charts on each step of the writing process after class. I will also provide supplemental handouts to help practice the week's focus. You can do one page, all the pages, or none of the pages. These are optional pages so you can decide how much to do. ***************************************************************************** ****** TAKE THE CLASS MORE THAN ONCE ****** I understand that your learner may need more practice in learning how to write a multiparagraph paper. Your learner is welcome to take this course more than once. I do ask that the learner choose a different writing topic than a previous course. *********************************************************************************** ***** MISSED CLASS ***** I do not issue refunds for a missed class. If your learner misses a class, I will provide a lesson video. Your learner can follow along with the video to complete the lesson.
