Students will have the opportunity to learn about the development of the B-17, the hopes held for it and the realities it faced. We will discuss why, at first, it was thought to be so heavily armed that it needed no fighter escort. We will talk about the losses it suffered, and how it came into its own when combined with escorts. We will discuss the strategies it used to thwart air defenses and destroy targets on the ground. Most importantly we will discuss how its unique design and strategy changed the course of the war.
