This is a 4-week course that meets once a week for 1 hour. We will examine the history of World War 1, starting with Archduke Ferdinand, to the treaty of Versailles. The class is a lecture-and discussion-based course. Participation is encouraged but not required. I enjoy telling stories from the perspective of the people who lived through and experienced the events discussed, so much of the class will focus on historical narratives, technology, pictures, and videos of events being studied. 

The course will provide multiple perspectives. No prior knowledge is required. 

Week 1  
Archduke Francis Ferdinand is assassinated. 
Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
Invasions 
First Battle of the Marne.

Week 2 
German naval blockade
Allied forces land on the Gallipoli Peninsula of the Ottoman Empire.
The Lusitania 
Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary.
Attack on Verdun.

Week 3
War tech
Naval Battle of Jutland
Battle of the Somme.
The United States declares war on Germany.
General John J. Pershing, 


Week 4
American combat forces arrive in France.
Russia signs an armistice with Germany.
Battle of Cantigny, the first independent American operation.
American forces stop German attempts to cross the Marne River at Chateau-Thierry.
Battle at St. Mihiel salient and Meusse-Argonne

The class will address armed conflicts. Class discussion will focus on the lasting legacy of these conflicts and how they continue to shape the world today. The class will address issues of racism, nationalism, as well as armed conflicts. Class discussion will focus on the lasting legacy of conflicts and how they continue to shape the world today. There will be discussions on potentially politically divisive topics. Students will be expected and required to respect different views and experiences. To this end, we will look at history from varying perspectives, with a focus on objective and provable facts.

I have a degree in history and have performed significant graduate, legal, and historical research on this topic, including the impact of both Worlds Wars on immigration and migration patterns and government policy.  Originally from Puerto Rico, I grew up in the low-income housing projects of New York City. I have worked in law for over 20 years. This includes experience as a refugee officer in Africa and South East Asia. 

As required by Outschool regarding I have significant expertise in conflict resolution and mediation. I have received mediation training as part of my legal degree and receive continuing education training in both mediation and conflict resolution to retain my legal licensure. I have participated in several mediations and alternative dispute resolution proceedings. I have provided training in conflict resolution and de-escalation at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. In 2020 I co-taught a class on mediation at the Univerity of Maryland, School of Social Work.
