1-2 horas por semana. All students will have reading to do each week and usually a graphic organizer to facilitate understanding of the literary lens accompanying the current piece(s). There may be a supplemental reading or video available to help clarify and cement those concepts for students. This will take approximately 45 mins to 1 hour/week for most students. Students opting to participate in the research skills portion of the course will have an additional assignment each week that teaches and/or exercises their research skills. This will take approximately 1 to 2 hours/week for most students (depending on the type of work assigned for that week)Evaluación
Parents can be given a paragraph evaluation of student work and participation upon request. Numerical grades are possible for students that submit all assignments. Emphasis is placed on student improvement and development.Calificación

Selected readings change every semester. Based on an older Great Books Foundation world literature anthology using freely available stories supplied in PDF by the instructor, the selection of short stories brings together the voices of modern, critically-acclaimed writers from all over the world, including many Nobel laureates. Five world regions—The Americas, Europe, Africa, The Middle East and South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific Rim—are represented by literature selected with the help of experts from each area. Each week, students will read a piece of literature (sometimes two) in preparation for class time. They will begin collaborating on the piece using Perusall between live class time. During live class time, I will facilitate a Shared Inquiry/Socratic discussion that explores some of the student topics and others through the discussion of the literature. Students learn how to find evidence in the literature to support their ideas and claims. They learn how to support or disagree other student's statements in a constructive and respectful manner. Through this process, they are also analyzing the literature although they may not realize that is what they are doing! Semester topics: * Benefits and process of Active Reading * How to participate meaningfully in a Shared Inquiry literature discussion * Value of reading world literature * Translation considerations * Literature of: * North, Central & South Americas * The Caribbean * Europe * Middle East and Southeast Asia * East Asia and the Pacific Rim * Africa Readings are done the week before class discussion. Material will be provided by the instructor through PDFs. Students will also participate in the learning management system. There is an OPTION to participate in activities that teach students the foundations of how to write a research paper but this is focusing on research skills vs. writing skills. This course will be offered each semester for up to 2 semesters of differing content that can use the same book.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their active reading skills, ability to analyze literature, recognize some key literary techniques and engage in respectful discourse using evidence to support claims.
Students engaged in the research component will improve their ability to participate in research projects by gaining skills that will extend to research projects beyond literature.

In addition to being formally trained in Shared Inquiry at Great Books Foundation and facilitating Great Books courses for teens before now, I have also taught most of my courses through Socratic discussion and "facilitated journey" or "coaching" style--which leads the students to learning rather than vomiting the information onto them and hoping they remember. I have a keen interest in developing critical and analytical thinking skills in students; and ensuring they are capable of building connections with others through respectful discourse. That means they learn to challenge others opinions in a constructive (rather than destructive) manner.
