In this ongoing course, students will solve word problems to learn, review and practice all crucial and required topics of third grade math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and more. We will be practicing 1-step, 2-step and multi-step word problems. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. All classes will include instruction, practice, and application problems (word problems). Homework and review material will be provided after class, but it is optional. Because this class is ongoing, students can enroll at any time. Classes do not build upon each other. The topics will rotate according to the schedule below: **2024-25 School Year: Week of Sept 2 - Addition and Subtraction within 1000 Week of Sep. 9 - Multiplication (0-12) Week of Sep. 16 - Division (0-12) Week of Sep. 23 - Multiplying by 10 and Multiples of 10 Week of Sep. 30 - Perimeter and Area Week of Oct. 7 - Fractions Week of Oct. 14 - Place Value, Rounding, Comparing, Estimating Week of Oct. 21 - Money 1 Week of Oct. 28 - Money 2 Week of Nov. 4 - Money 3 Week of Nov. 11 - 3D Shapes Week of Nov. 18 - Unit Fractions Week of Nov. 25 - Fractions of a Whole Week of Dec. 2 - Fractions of a Group Week of Dec. 9 - Ordering Fractions Week of Dec. 16 - Equivalent Fractions Week of Dec. 23 - Add/Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators Week of Dec. 30 - Time: Elapsed time, Beginning/end time Week of Jan. 6 - Measurement: Imperial System Week of Jan. 13 - Measurement: Metric System Week of Jan. 20 - Data: Bar Graphs Week of Jan 27 - Data: Picture Graphs Week of Feb. 3 - Area: Unit Squares Week of Feb. 10 - Area: Complex Shapes Week of Feb. 17 - Geometry: Shapes and their Attributes Week of Feb. 24 - Multi-Digit Multiplication Week of Mar. 3 - TBD Once topics have been cycled through, we will begin again. (There will always be a new set of word problems in each class. A learner who stays enrolled on an ongoing basis will not be presented with the same word problems as any previous class, even if the topic is the same as a previous class.) Occasionally, new topics will be added to the rotation, based on learner's skills and interests. Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 7 to 9, or those students looking to practice the 3rd-grade math objectives or skills. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
