Conceptos básicos de Word Craft: raíces y bases

This class will be split into three major sections:

The first part of class will be dedicated to mastering the use of roots and bases in the English language. This will be a discussion based lesson in what roots and bases are, a bit of history on why they can be a bit of a mess, and a demonstration of how they work inside larger words. There will be opportunities to practice and demonstrate mastery of important topics before we move on.

The second part of class will be a brief in-class assessment designed to check a student’s overall level of mastery. This is for assessment purposes and will have no affect on a student’s grade.

The third portion of class will be a competition based game. Students will be split into two teams, chosen by me, in order to come up with a series of words based on the roots and bases covered in the lesson. For each word they come up with, they must write a sentence about the meaning to act as a clue to the word, Jeopardy style. Teams will then play to see which team guesses the most clues. Points will be assigned based on the clarity of the clue, the creativity of the word used, and the team’s ability to work together.




The overall teaching style for the lesson will be a mix of lecture and class discussion, with an opportunity for one-on-one feedback throughout. The class will mostly focus on understanding how roots and bases work, with minimal focus on memorizing specific bases or roots. The follow up classes will focus on expanding a student’s vocabulary. Checking for proper usage of new words in sentences will largely happen in the homework assignment.
